For most general purpose use cases, yes. Browsing, multiple apps, photo editing, viewing video will all be fine. Especially with Apple Silicon (the M* chips) you'll do very little memory swapping. Constant Geekery did a terrific video on this. [youtu.be]

You'll need 16GB if you edit videos a lot, use lots of containers, or try to run lots of local AI. But for those tasks you'd probably want a MacBook Pro with the extra GPUs anyway.

Edit: I'd be much more concerned about 256GB vs 512GB storage. Check how much you currently use. I could probably be much more aggressive about pruning, but I find I often use 400GB total storage.

What is the automatic coverage? It is making me add Apple Care separately.

There is a link to Costco warranty on the page:

https://techsupport.costco.com/ap...d/1001211/

They auto extend manufacturers warranty up to 2 yrs on computer, major appliance, tvs and projectors.

AppleCare has more coverage than just manufacturers, and also sold at a good discount if bought at Costco.

We bought this last weekend, tax free weekend in Missouri, for $900. Costco gave us a credit for the $50 difference and let us keep the tax free purchase. Didn't think that would work, but it never hurts to ask.

Depends on what you're doing. General browsing and whatnot, yeah it is. Work type stuff, maybe not.

I'm sure Costco paid Allstate well over $200+ million dollars as a partnership contract to help and promote free service plans with the purchase of their products. I believe any business or retailer who can afford to do this with an insurance company should follow the same principle while including this on every purchase.

M1 for daily uses. M3 is overkill for most things you do unless you are looking for specific graphic work. More ram would be better for excel, running multiple browser tabs, etc.

My prediction is that they'll bump up to 12gb next and stay there for six years.

Less than 30 days ago I bought the M2 model at Costco for $799
I'm debating on returning that one and purchasing this one.

Is getting an M3 worth the extra $50 or should I just stick with the M2 that I already have?

We have a little base m2 mini for the kids homework, and the thing stutters doing the fancy 4k screensavers that apple rolled out a year ago. Open 8 chrome tabs and the settings menu and it lags more than my 16gb MacBook.

The difference between the base model and a better one is very obvious doing way less than "use lots of containers"

This is $850, it is what it is. But I wouldn't spend any more for the base model.
