Just bought this, but now wondering if the neo one is better—larger build area. Is this one easier to use? It's for a 15 yo.
You made the right choice. The V3 is a much better machine.

Code works on the Ender 3 V3 KE, it is $143 with coupon.

The KE has a filament sensor, but seems to be about the same overall. Is getting the KE worth the extra $50 over the SE for a first printer?

Great review! Man I really want network control. Any clue what would be the best route for that? I have an ender clone that works fantastic but I kinda wanna update to something that prints faster. I have a Voxelab Aquila. Do you have any clue how much better something like this would be? Thanks
No idea compared to the printer you currently have. If you want network printing I would suggest either getting the V3 KE as I think it has that ability already and has some other advantages over the SE. Alternatively I would suggest looking at this Flashforge Adventure 5M deal.
https://slickdeals.net/f/17674287-flashforge-adventurer-5m-corexy-3d-printer-239-ebay

I upgraded from my V3 SE to the FF 5M as much for hobby interest/curiosity as anything else. However, it does have a few things that got my attention. As I was doing prints with the V3 SE I was pushing my luck with build plate adhesion. Some of my prints had, by my choice, limited surface area in contact with the build plate. With a bed slinger like the V3 SE the fast movements of the Y axis caused some of my support trees to fall or some of the poorly supported features in my prints to shake during printing. It's just an inherent issue with bed slingers. Slowing the print speed can address these issues but that leads me to the second reason for my upgrade. I was simply curious and my low ball ebay offer was accepted Big Grin (about the same net price as the deal above).

So FF 5M vs V3 SE.
  • Deal vs deal the FF is $240 vs $100 so quite a bit more money.
  • The net print quality is similar but I've found the 5M to be better using default slicer settings
  • The 5M is faster. From what I've seen the 5M is one of the fastest consumer printers under $1k. I saw one review that showed it as slightly faster than the Bambu Labs X1C. The difference was largely trivial but it's faster. The SE is fast compared to older Ender 3 models but slow compared to the newer, vibration compensated machines. Does that matter? Well 40 minutes vs 60-70 minutes might if you need something already but doesn't if you are printing over night.
  • The 5M runs Klipper. The printer supports network printing (older reviews say only via FF's slicer but it's now also supported via Orca Slicer). I don't do network printing but I like that I can print from a USB stick vs SD card.
  • The 5M's auto leveling and auto z-height work well. Both printers do leveling well but I felt I had to adjust the V3SE's z-offset manually to dial in challenging first layers. The 5M just seems to get it right without help. If I change the build plate for a particular print the 5M has an option to level before the print. It doesn't add much time and makes a difference when the build new build plate is thincker/thinner than the normal one. This is an option with the V3SE but it's much slower so I would rarely do it.
  • The 5M has a filament runout sensor. One can be added to the V3SE (V3KE includes one) but it's not part of the factory setup.
  • The 5M can print more challenging/hotter filaments. It's nozzle can go hotter than the V3SE (but not as hot as the V3KE). FF also has files so you can print your own enclosure for the printer. However, that enclosure and associated hardware can cost upwards of $70. If I were serious about those harder to print plastics I would probably look at getting the 5M Pro since it's already enclosed and includes air filters. At $500 it was outside of my curiosity budget.
  • The V3SE is quieter. Both printers have silent steppers so they don't sound like a 90s scanner, but both also have fan noise. The 5M's fans are louder
  • As a member of the Ender family, there is a lot of V3SE knowledge base out there. Also many slicers have a profile for the V3SE or an older Ender 3 profile that will work if needed. The FF5M is by comparison, unknown.
  • Ender 3 parts are cheaper. A new/different size nozzle are many for under $10 (like box of 20 in various sizes) vs $30-40 each for the 5M (the 5M nozzles are integrated with the heaters).
  • I far prefer filament changes on the Ender vs the 5M. On the 5M you cut off the filament at the top of the extruder. The system then runs all of the filament out and tells you to start feeding the new color in. The system runs the extruder for a preset time and sometimes you feel like you are just wasting plastic with a change. The Ender is more traditional where you push a release level, pull the filament out from the top then push the new stuff it. If you want you can manually push it through the extruder (keep holding that lever) until you decide things are complete. Net result is I tend not to change filaments with the 5M while I was happy to change with the Ender because I could do it faster and with less waste.

/<FF5M shill>

I think the V3SE would be an upgrade for speed but if network printing is important, skip the SE. The upgrades needed to get network printing running would cost you more than getting something like the V3KE or other printer that already has that built in.

Unless you need the larger build area, no the Neo is not a better printer. The Neo uses an Bowden tube extruder vs the direct drive in the SE. This means the SE is likely to do better if you have a print that requires frequent starts/stops of the extruding plastic. It also is better if you want to print flexible materials. The SE doesn't have to deal with bed leveling knobs (So will prefer having those but they are one more thing to setup). The overall size of the SE is potentially a big deal as these machines do take up a bit of space. The SE has both a smaller base size but also has fewer bits hanging out beyond the edges of the frame. Finally, the Neo is slower. The Neo is basically the same vintage as the Ender 3 V2 with a leveling sensor + the larger build area.

However, if you think helmets or other large prints are a must, well there is no replacement for displacement.

How tight is the budget? The KE comes with a PEI build plate out of the box. That was one of my upgrades (they cost $15-20). The KE can print faster, can print over the network via Klipper, and has a nicer X axis (linear rail vs V wheels). It also has a nicer screen (larger touch screen vs click knob screen).

Since I think the PEI plate is a really good upgrade, that makes the price gap more like $25-30. I would say it's probably worth it. However, if you, like I was when I bought my first printer, really price sensitive, I would say the SE is plenty good without spending more money.

I originally bought this last year as a Christmas gift to myself. I can echo what a lot of others have said. It works well enough out of the box. I started getting a lot of failed prints and it was frustrating as a beginner to try and learn and troubleshoot. The auto z-offset was the culprit. Had to tweak it manually. The fans are also loud and annoying. I upgraded them to quieter ones and also printed a dual duct fan shroud for the parts cooling fan. This also helped with the print quality.

All in all, it's a good printer for the price, but be prepared to tinker and tweak it.

FWIW I "upgraded" to the Bambu A1 Mini and it's been a night and day experience. The A1 Mini blows the Creality out of the water in every way.
At $200 the A1 mini is a real wrench in the low end market. It's reputation for just working makes it much harder to suggest a $100 entry level option vs saying just spend $200 and not worry. I have run into a lot of cases where the smaller build area would be an issue. If the A1 were $200 it would be almost a no brainer (I'm still concerned about what info Bambu Labs may be sending home to China but that might be just paranoia).

I was looking for under $200, and of course the cheaper the better.
The PEI build plate is something else I saw on reviews after I posted, and seems everyone says it is almost a must to have to prevent headaches. Same for the x-axis setup. It can also handle a bit higher temps and more types of filament.
Looks like a few small upgrades over the SE that aren't absolute deal breakers, but are definitely nice to have.

Network printing and speed are not big deals for me (at least I don't think they are), moving files to a SD card and inserting it does not bother me, and it is not like I plan on printing 10 things a day. I have a few little things I plan on making, but after that, it may sit for months not being used (or maybe not?)
Touch screen vs dial wheel are not issues for me either.

Yep, A1 mini is twice as much but 1/3 of the headache compared to other "beginner friendly" printers. Pretty good investment if that 1/3 also translates to 1/3 of the time to tinker/calibrating.

Nice price... But I am very much over all enders... My s1 is crap. Some of .y coworkers purchased the bamboo labels a1 mini for fun at the office... I have never seen out of the box performance like that. It auto adjusts everything!!!

Do yourself a favor, spend $230 shipped from Bamboo labs. Please, you only waste time tinkering and not printing. $200 is cheap. I paid 400 plus to get my s1 to a good place and I hate it. I want to sell it and get bamboo labs

Is the OP posted one better/worse than the max neo? Seems close in price. I have a monoprice one with auto bed leveling but it isnt the best. Adhering issues (yes, glue, tape, etc).

See my post #23. Which Monoprice printer are you thinking about? They are all made by other companies and not always the same vendor. I have a Cadet and while it's build size and speed are very limited, the masking tape based build plate has always held really well for me.

Ive got the Select Mini Pro. It seems there is one corner that is always low no matter what and very little sticks to it. Might be my table isnt fully level or something but yeah, its made it quite difficult for me to print anything consistently.

FFS please just buy A1 mini from Bambulabs if this is your first printer. It's $100 more, but it will work out of the box. I wasted so much time tinkering around trying to get my Ender 3 V3 SE to work. If I had just spent a little more I could have spent more time printing and way less time farting around trying to get the damn ender to print well.

Bambu labs is on another planet compared to these POS.
