What are people using this for ? It is too heavy for a key-chain carabiner and completely useless for a lock.

Don't think of it as a lock. Think of it as a "deterrent". It raises your level of security above what it currently is. If someone were to use this to lock the zippers on their bag, it greatly reduces the chances that someone can quickly grab something. Or it could deter hotel staff from rummaging through the bag.

Personally, I think this lock looks like a decent value for $4. But only if you have the appropriate use case.
