Orico is selling a 1 TB on Amazon for $45, 15% off prime+10% code. I didn't know they made SSDs until recently. I've had a lot of luck with their enclosures so I figured I would give it a try. $45 for a one terabyte is pretty amazing. I use their stuff for work all the time and it's been reliable.

If this is the one, it's qlc.

"Orico guarantees an endurance rating of 300 TBW, a relatively low value compared to other SSDs."

Oof. This is not my ssd.

Note this is a Gen 3 SSD, not a Gen 4. It's gonna be slow
Most users won't notice a difference at all...... slower than Gen4, sure by theoretical speeds, but playing games, loading programs, it won't make a perceptible difference.

You got to love it. Gen 3 NVME drives being referred to as slow. The only people benefiting from NVME protocol over Sata are primarily video editors who do numerous large file transfers consistently or any other productivity workload with a similar throughput. The fact that gen3 and gen4 or even sata for that matter, no longer have large price disparity is the only reason to go gen 4. Not because it's slow.

That being said, this drives being QLC, dramless and having a low 300 TBW makes it hard to consider for anything other than storage.

Besides running speed test, no one really knows without looking up specs or model number…
Makes absolutely no difference in os load times, or even the most intensive games or even the most recent AI focused applications (not talking server side)

Actually, the image browsing is productive! One of CrystalDisk screenshots says firmware "vc2s038e". Googling that gets one to the controller Realtek RL6577, all of the images show TLC. Just google something like "vc2s038e rl6577", and click Images.

But - this is mystery meat, you can get something with a totally different controller/flash.

Lots of companies relabel these into their "own" products, so Orico jumped in.

Only as a storage drive, qlc tends to gas out on high io/large writes.

It came yesterday but returning tomorrow. I wasn't concerned about speed—I only needed around 100MB/s, which was fine for my needs. However, this SSD has been a major disappointment. It consistently fails to record my backups from my 256GB thumb drive on the first try, and the issues persist even after multiple attempts. Unfortunately, I can't rely on this drive for even basic tasks.

Have you tried another enclosure? I assume USB right?

Those nvme usb enclsores sometimes come with dodgy cables, or require powered hubs.

Would be really weird for the drive to flake out if on the motherboard though.

I used the same brand, Orico's enclosure, along with Cable Matters' 10Gbps cable that worked seamlessly with my Samsung Evo 970.

So its not just slowing down its dropping off usb entirely?

Maybe requires RMA.
