Toshiba MD09 MD09ACA18TR 18TB 7.2K RPM SATA 6Gb/s 512e Desktop 3.5in Recertified Hard Drive.

Comes with a 2 year seller's warranty. I couldn't find much online regarding this MD09 line of drives but was able to confirm with SPD that these are CMR drives. Lots of threads regarding this seller already so I decided to give them a shot.

Comes out to about $9/TB

How do these compare to the 18TB Seagate Exos X20 3.5" 7.2K RPM SATA Hard Drive that go sale? Looks like currently $168 on ebay.

I bought a 16TB Seagate from this seller about a year ago. Have had no issues as of yet.

Those HGST 12TB for $75 have a 5 year warranty FWIW. Seems like a real steep cost curve from 12/14tb to 18tb

I have the 16 and 20tb exos in a truenas server. Working great and no issues.

I have had the Toshiba N series hdd before (6TB ones) and ran in a Raid 1 for over 4 years before I put grew the size capacity and ended up replacing them. But had zero issues with them.

I would say pick either one that's cheaper and you won't go wrong either way. Both are enterprise drives, both have 550TB per year workload rating, both have 2.5million hour mtbf rating..

I think that I remember my grand-dad talking about Toshiba stuff back in the day... I think he had a Toshiba TV too.

Yep, but you also have to consider how much a larger NAS/DAS costs for a given storage amount and the extra power consumption for more drives. They're also going to have a couple more years of use than the 18TB drives.

general question - im on the market for a external hd to just store movies and pics, etc. nothing strenuous on a everyday basis. can i just use this + a hd enclosure to essentially make it an external hd and is there any cons compared to buying a manufactured external hd??

it seems to be cheaper to go this route per terabyte, so just curious as to why external hd's this size go for $275+

There is very little issue with using an internal drive paired with an enclosure compared to purchasing an external drive. The biggest issue I can see is that there is the possibility that you make a poor choice for which enclosure you get. That being said, purchasing an external drive doesn't mean that the manufacturer did a good job on the enclosure they pair with the drive either.

In general, there are no issues using an internal drive as an external drive. Similarly, if an external drive has a normal SATA connection on the inside, there are no issues removing the enclosure from an external drive and using it as an internal drive.

I took a chance and went with the Seagate Exos X22 16TB [newegg.com] for about the same price.
The X22 should be newer with hopefully less use. These were released in 2022 I think.
