Really tempted to pull the trigger on this. Can someone comment on the performance of HX processers? I've heard battery life gets affected for AMD and Intel HX CPUs, is that accurate?

Intel 13000 and 14000 CPUs are notoriously power hungry. You're better off going with the latest AMD Laptops.

Also INTEL has been less than forthcoming about their current problems with their desktop silicone of the same series (13000 and 14000). It wouldn't be surprising if their mobile CPUs suffered similarly.

This is coming from someone who has a 13700k in a desktop and a 13700h in a laptop.

Is this affected by the new microcode aka throttlegate made to prevent chip damage? Heard that in some instances boost clocks have been unachievable after the microcode update.

Is there an extra M.2 slot on this one?

So do you think AMD Ryzen HX are better than Intel HX? I've read a bunch of threads where people are complaining about bad battery life for a Ryzen 9 7940hx.

Overall I'd just avoid Intel 14 gen altogether until Intel gets all their affairs in order.

Personally, even if they didn't have the huge issues at the moment, I'd still be looking at AMD over Intel, especially for efficiency and battery life. Even then while intel 13th gen and 14gen has high specs they tend to thermal throttle faster and hurt the overall performance.

So to answer your question if it was an equivalent HX I'd go AMD.

However don't just compare CPU specs. Look for the overall build quality of the laptop as that can dramatically influence the performance.

Some laptops have great specs but their cooling implementation is crap, same can go for power conservation and battery life. My advice is find one or two laptops you would like to buy and do massive research on overall build. Plenty of youtubers do reviews and comparisons which help massively.

EDIT:

There are stickied posts on r/gaminglaptops specifically for Intel 13/14 gen H and HX series CPU's overvolting past 1.5v when they shouldn't be requesting more than 1.4v.
Take a look and if you do buy one, make sure to undervolt with the guides they have.

The throttling problem, or whatever you want to call the current intel issue, will probably affect desktop more than laptops because laptop CPUs should be designed around power efficiency and don't have the same power delivery as a desktop mobo. I'm an AMD user and fan, I would still consider buying this laptop knowing that the performance post-update will be decreased by 2-3%, maybe in the most demanding tasks, otherwise, it is probably low-risk IMO of being susceptible since the bios updates should reduce peak voltages. I don't like what Intel did, but it wouldn't keep me from buying a laptop at a discount if I were in the market. Plus, you're buying it knowing about the issue, so hopefully a user can update prior to damaging the cpu.

HX is the super high performance model so both will have poor battery life. Your best bet is an AMD HS processor like the Ryzen 7 7840HS

They complain about both. I have the 13th gen i7 HX chip and its a power hungry chip when the power setting is set to performance.
