Hard wired means fewer connections to have an issue later. There are the screws holding the wires into the back of the outlet which need to be properly torqued, the plug contacts themselves and finally the plug contacts at the charger end. All that is before the end that plugs into the car. The cheap NEMA 14-50 plugs don't put up well with continuous high amp draws. They're also not meant to be unplugged much. Hard wiring eliminates the potentially problematic NEMA 14-50 plug. It also charges faster. Some utilities also offer charging management incentives with Autel chargers. Food for thought.

Great price. Company has been in business for 18 years, so this helps people who worry about off-name brands not keeping up with the apps

Is there an advantage to using this over just a plug and the Tesla mobile charger? Other than it's 50A and the mobile charger is 32A?

No

Keep in mind that the 50A is for hardwired. You're going to get 40A if you plug it in to a 240V outlet.

But it's still a good price. A lot of people like the Emporia chargers, if you can find them on sale. Normal price for them are $400

Would this be a better charger than a tesla wall connector? I have a 30 amp 240line run to my garage and was planning on doing a tesla wall mount. This is essentially the same thing?

Charges faster, I myself upgraded from a 32AMP to an 80AMP charger and wouldn't go back Smilie

Very useful if you have Solar or two cars where you want to capitalize on the sunlight since it takes 1/3 of the time to charge the car.

I had an Autel charger for over a year before changing to a unit supported by my electrical utility for discounted rates.

The Autel had really nice tracking functionality for usage, instantaneous voltage, amps, and power recorded for each charging session. Very nice app. At the time tesla wall connector did not provide any statistics of charging sessions. I believe they do now.

The Autel Maxicharger I had supported Dynamic load sharing, meaning two chargers could share the same Circuit. This is not supported by Tesla. It appears this unit also supports this feature.

Autel also allows you to link an RFID card to the charger to allow it to start. I played around with my Tesla key and it appeared that it worked, my office badge also worked.

Customer service is all online, but good when I needed them for questions.

Will more utilities come on board with time of use charging using the charger, and will Autel be approved before Tesla, maybe.

Either unit is a good choice.. I ended up going chargepoint, due to utility billing, and I don't like it nearly as well as the Autel. Data on the chargepoint is only recorded every 5-10 minutes, and it's crashed with the red ring of death requiring a reboot 3 times in the last year.

Assuming you have a good quality 240v outlet, the difference is just in the amperage, as this unit can handle up to 50 amps. But most of the time people have cheapo 50 amp outlets, which will often melt under continuous charging loads.

Yes, the 14-50 plug for the UMC requires an expensive GFCI breaker, and a 14-50 needs 3 conductors + ground, whereas a hardwired EVSE like this does not require a GFCI breaker (standard is fine) and only 2 conductors + ground, so wiring is cheaper.

The receptacle should be industrial/commerical/EV rated as the inexpensive 14-50s can fail. I had one melt in my garage after 2 years of use.

Also your EV needs to be able to take advantage of the extra amperage. If your car has a 7KW onboard charger, then it is pointless getting this since this is supplying 11kW but your car can only charge at the lower rate. At which point you are better off with a 32/40 amp charger if you already have that.

Now if this is your first charger, then it's good future proofing.

Tesla universal wall connector has a built in NACS >> J1772 adapter and can be daisy chained to support multiple connectors on a single circuit, sharing the available capacity. If you need neither of these features, the functionality is pretty much the same.

You will be surprised how few chargers your elec util company supports for time-based discounted elec pricing.

Great info! Tesla Gen 3 wall connectors (Wall connector, J1772 Wall connector, and Universal wall connector) support dynamic load sharing up to 6 units (any variant) on a single circuit. They call it "Group power management".

They do now provide statistics for each charging session / over time in the Tesla app. Also, if you have a supported EV optiwatt is a good option for seeing those stats and more.
