I actually bought this last month to bypass my phone's hotspot data limitations so I can slack off at work.

If you have a modern android phone(I use a galaxy s21) you can install EasyTether pro on the android phone and connect the phone to the router with a USB-A to USB-C cable and it will let you use the phone's data.

Any devices connected to this router will use the phone data without using "hotspot" data

It does require some setting up but not too difficult.

once it is setup, you just turn the router on and open up easytether on your phone and plug your phone into the router.

the setup is basically

1. installing the driver in openwrt.
download the openwrt 19.xx -openssl download on the mobile-stream website, who is the developer of easytether

the driver is in the "mediatek" folder, labeled mt7622.

2. buy and install easytether pro on your android device.

3. turn on the usb debugging on your phone.

4. open the easytether app on the phone and plug in the phone to the router.

5. In OpenWrt configure the EasyTether network interface (tap-easytether) to use DHCP and make it part of your WAN zone.

for more clarification, you can see the easytether website instructions next to the openwrt 19.xx driver download

the driver is the mt7622 file. you should install this using stock gl.net firmware because if you flash the latest openwrt firmware and then try to install this driver, you will get errors

My cell carrier is USmobile with GSM network btw. and it works without any issues for atleast 8 hours straight. I didnt test longer than that as it is unnecessary.

also make sure that the cable used is a data-transfer and not a charge-only usb-a to usb-c cable. you can figure which is which if the connect the phone to a computer and the computer recognizes the phone as a phone and you can move pictures from the phone to the computer. this was the part that caused me alot of trouble.
These perform better than regular hot spots. You connect 2-3 devices on hotspots and you'll notice that it starts slowing down. GL iNet devices have the same features as bigger routers. Port Forwarding, Static routing, VPN, Dynamic DNS and more. I wouldn't use the GL iNet travel router for home use though.
you don't really need the app, but it makes it easier.
you can change the TTL param in the router, and get the same result.

Was watching this deal for a bit seems like a decent amount off. Mine is shipped so I can't speak to its performance but people seem pretty happy with it.

I have one, they are very cool and perform very well. OpenVPN client can hit about 150mbs (if you want that when traveling) which may not be an issue if you are traveling since your network connection may not even be enough to overwhelm the OpenVPN speed. Firmware is continually being updated, so there is alot of active updates.

Are you talking about the regular mobile hotspot or is there a more sophisticated way of doing this?

Regular hotspot, will likely have better performance than a lot of these gl inet devices. Turning on the mobile hotspot while on wifi essentially converts it in to a repeater you can then connect back home using openvpn or wireguard.

it doesn't have any built in modem, so that would be a no.
you can however tether a cell phone via USB or wifi.

you can change the TTL param in the router, and get the same result.

Where do you do this? Is there a plugin that makes it easy?

If you are referring to setting up the router as a repeater connected to the hotspot then yes I am familiar. In the past, i have also used my phone as a hotspot & a experimental ddwrt repeater.

However, I don't know if my carrier is using TTL to determine whether it is a mobile hotspot datausage or some deeper packet inspection. If it didnt work, it would require significant effort/research to determine how T-mobile data operates and how to do a workaround for it.

In the past, When I initially troubleshooting why my ddwrt repeater + hotspot setup wasn't working, I came across an obscure post somewhere that the reason why it wasn't working was because of an mtu setting which was too high and manually setting it to less than the default # will fix it. So I tried it and voila it did fix it.

But I would like to avoid doing unnecessary work again.

Plus using the router in repeater mode will lead to increased instability which may result in buffering when watching Netflix in the office

You believe a $10 app would do highly advanced magic ?

MTU <> TTL
