I actually bought this last month to bypass my phone's hotspot data limitations so I can slack off at work.

If you have a modern android phone(I use a galaxy s21) you can install EasyTether pro on the android phone and connect the phone to the router with a USB-A to USB-C cable and it will let you use the phone's data.

Any devices connected to this router will use the phone data without using "hotspot" data

It does require some setting up but not too difficult.

once it is setup, you just turn the router on and open up easytether on your phone and plug your phone into the router.

the setup is basically

1. installing the driver in openwrt.
download the openwrt 19.xx -openssl download on the mobile-stream website, who is the developer of easytether

the driver is in the "mediatek" folder, labeled mt7622.

2. buy and install easytether pro on your android device.

3. turn on the usb debugging on your phone.

4. open the easytether app on the phone and plug in the phone to the router.

5. In OpenWrt configure the EasyTether network interface (tap-easytether) to use DHCP and make it part of your WAN zone.

for more clarification, you can see the easytether website instructions next to the openwrt 19.xx driver download

the driver is the mt7622 file. you should install this using stock gl.net firmware because if you flash the latest openwrt firmware and then try to install this driver, you will get errors

My cell carrier is USmobile with GSM network btw. and it works without any issues for atleast 8 hours straight. I didnt test longer than that as it is unnecessary.

also make sure that the cable used is a data-transfer and not a charge-only usb-a to usb-c cable. you can figure which is which if the connect the phone to a computer and the computer recognizes the phone as a phone and you can move pictures from the phone to the computer. this was the part that caused me alot of trouble.

These perform better than regular hot spots. You connect 2-3 devices on hotspots and you'll notice that it starts slowing down. GL iNet devices have the same features as bigger routers. Port Forwarding, Static routing, VPN, Dynamic DNS and more. I wouldn't use the GL iNet travel router for home use though.

you don't really need the app, but it makes it easier.
you can change the TTL param in the router, and get the same result.

Yes, that is what I currently do. However, when one travels often and you are in a new hotel every other week; it gets to be a pain.
to log on, once, via the router, to the hotel wifi ?
shouldn't take more time than doing the same, using your cell phone ...?

FYI - I have one and the EasyTether Driver OpenWrt 19.07.3+ for mt7622 works on this with Gl-iNet firmware >= 3.216 (including at least some 4.x versions) even though this is not a supported router model and its not a mt7622 chipset

Official beta firmware supports EAP.
Are you talking about the 4.6.3 beta firmware supporting EAP? I thought only the 4.6.0-op24 (OpenWRT based driver) supported EAP (and that one has bugs)

I think this is about the same price as Prime Day. Which is a good price.

How does this compare to a hotspot off a Windows 11 laptop? I mainly use this when I stay in a hotel, and I can hotspot off of my computer instead of bringing another router

I bought this a few months ago hoping it would make travel easier. My plan was to preconfigure all my kids devices, switches, tablets, Roku, etc, plus my phone and laptop to auto connect to this router which would VPN back to my home network. It absolutely struggles with the captcha screens in most hotels making it virtually useless. I was able to temporarily clone the Mac address in my phone to make it work, but that stopped working after a few minutes. Decided not to spend my vacation time troubleshooting device issues. Overall for the amount of time you spend configuring or troubleshooting the device, I don't think it is a worthwhile purchase.

Have any of the updates added a small browser or similar functionality to allow native logging into captive portals such as at a hotel?
Yes, I know about logging in with your phone to the new SSID, then cloning your phone's private MAC. But it seems more often that it doesn't work smoothly and takes multiple tries.
Unless the wifi you are connecting the router to is clued into its game, you don't need to worry about having to clone anything.
The router connects to the wifi and your device connects to the router. When you are connected to the router it proxies your requests through said router. If there is an automatic redirect to a captive portal, then whatever device you are on (phone, laptop, etc) will get redirected to the captive portal page just like it would if you connected to the WiFi SSID directly. Then you agree/interact with the captive portal and everything behind the router will start to work without any extra effort.
I have this router myself. I've used it on a cruise ship and multiple hotels in the last 30 days. The firmware is good and it will suit your needs for MOST situations.

FWIW I have the Wifi 5 (AX) version of this and it's great. If your intended use case is to act as a gateway to hotel wifi for your personal devices, I would get the much cheaper AX version. I've never encountered hotel WIFI that was capable of utilizing Wifi 6 speeds.

The one you refer to have a very weak cpu that only capable of 12Mbps on OpenVPN. The Beryl AX is capable of 150Mbps on OpenVPN, it's night and day difference.

Here's a similar product for ~$10 less. $63 after 30% off coupon. No idea what OS it is running or how often it gets updated though. It goes down to $58 during recent Lightning Deal sales.

I used this last month at the Grand Hyatt in Taipei for several days with NordVPN and AdGuard running and had no problems with their login page (last name/room) or the connections with about 6-7 devices.

Can you do this with an iPhone?

I bought this a few months ago and absolutely love it. It's saved my bacon a bunch of times in unexpected ways lately. The most useful one was using it as a wireless bridge between my phone's hotspot and my home router. We had about a month of total internet outage, and this was indispensable to making my home network work just as usual (although a little slower because the hotspot).

I have a slightly older version of this.

I use Nord VPN and you can connect your account to this. I have it connected to the slider switch. When it's on all traffic goes through the VPN. When the slider is off no traffic is allowed. So I used to use this on a PC that would download…content…over a the VPN. I had a download app bound to that network connection only. If for some reason the connection goes down the PC loses internet access on that card.

If I travel I can just disconnect and use it as an access point still using the VPN.

It's convenient.
