I actually bought this last month to bypass my phone's hotspot data limitations so I can slack off at work.

If you have a modern android phone(I use a galaxy s21) you can install EasyTether pro on the android phone and connect the phone to the router with a USB-A to USB-C cable and it will let you use the phone's data.

Any devices connected to this router will use the phone data without using "hotspot" data

It does require some setting up but not too difficult.

once it is setup, you just turn the router on and open up easytether on your phone and plug your phone into the router.

the setup is basically

1. installing the driver in openwrt.
download the openwrt 19.xx -openssl download on the mobile-stream website, who is the developer of easytether

the driver is in the "mediatek" folder, labeled mt7622.

2. buy and install easytether pro on your android device.

3. turn on the usb debugging on your phone.

4. open the easytether app on the phone and plug in the phone to the router.

5. In OpenWrt configure the EasyTether network interface (tap-easytether) to use DHCP and make it part of your WAN zone.

for more clarification, you can see the easytether website instructions next to the openwrt 19.xx driver download

the driver is the mt7622 file. you should install this using stock gl.net firmware because if you flash the latest openwrt firmware and then try to install this driver, you will get errors

My cell carrier is USmobile with GSM network btw. and it works without any issues for atleast 8 hours straight. I didnt test longer than that as it is unnecessary.

also make sure that the cable used is a data-transfer and not a charge-only usb-a to usb-c cable. you can figure which is which if the connect the phone to a computer and the computer recognizes the phone as a phone and you can move pictures from the phone to the computer. this was the part that caused me alot of trouble.

These perform better than regular hot spots. You connect 2-3 devices on hotspots and you'll notice that it starts slowing down. GL iNet devices have the same features as bigger routers. Port Forwarding, Static routing, VPN, Dynamic DNS and more. I wouldn't use the GL iNet travel router for home use though.

you don't really need the app, but it makes it easier.
you can change the TTL param in the router, and get the same result.

Can confirm the above. I purchased one of their cheaper travel routers to do this exact thing. I have an s24 ultra I use on T-Mobile connected as noted above, works great via easytether. Note, T-Mobile will count VPN traffic as hot spot, I found this out after testing it via PIA configured on the router.

Beyond that, I've used about 25-30gb of data this way, doesn't count against my 15gb of hotspot data, just as my phone data.

I have a slightly older version of this.

I use Nord VPN and you can connect your account to this. I have it connected to the slider switch. When it's on all traffic goes through the VPN. When the slider is off no traffic is allowed. So I used to use this on a PC that would download…content…over a the VPN. I had a download app bound to that network connection only. If for some reason the connection goes down the PC loses internet access on that card.

If I travel I can just disconnect and use it as an access point still using the VPN.

It's convenient.
Even more useful is setting up a tunnel in your own home router and being able to connect directly while abroad and access everything like you're right at home. But either way on the go VPN access is a must.

Plus don't forget this thing is super useful on an airplane and effectively circumvents any multiple device limitations when buying airline WiFi, as long as you purchase it through this connecting to the plane's wifi.

Is this better or the Asus travel router better?
There was an issue where this router couldn't handle Marriott login portal, I read a FW update should have solved the problem, but I have yet to test it out yet until my next trip.
From SW support perspective, maybe Asus is better? Granted it's more expensive, but for a long term use travel router, usability and stability is more important than price saving.

You simply download all the OVPN files, unzip this file from PIA: https://privateinternetaccess.com...penvpn.zip

Create a OpenVPN profile on the router, upload the OVPN file you want per your geo-location, enter your login, enter your password. Done.

This NOT for static house usage, its for traveling in a small space. It is not great for extending your wifi in a house. Get a mesh network

Wireguard only works with PIA's application, only OpenVPN access works with standard open source clients connecting to PIA. You have no choice.

Can anyone point to a good tutorial of repurposing an old home wifi router into a travel router like these with similar functions?

To keep this clear and concise, I broke the steps in 3 Set of steps
1. Initial Router setup
2. Phone setup
3. Final router setup

step 1. initial router setup
turn on the router. connect either through wifi or ethernet

Go the router IP 192.168.8.1

Enter the password. If first time, it will ask you to set a password.

Go to systems -> advance settings -> click on the "192.168.8.1/cgi-bin/luci" link

It will ask you to enter the password again.

Then in the top header, go to System-> Software.

On this page, click the "upload package button" and select the mt7622 file
