I actually bought this last month to bypass my phone's hotspot data limitations so I can slack off at work.

If you have a modern android phone(I use a galaxy s21) you can install EasyTether pro on the android phone and connect the phone to the router with a USB-A to USB-C cable and it will let you use the phone's data.

Any devices connected to this router will use the phone data without using "hotspot" data

It does require some setting up but not too difficult.

once it is setup, you just turn the router on and open up easytether on your phone and plug your phone into the router.

the setup is basically

1. installing the driver in openwrt.
download the openwrt 19.xx -openssl download on the mobile-stream website, who is the developer of easytether

the driver is in the "mediatek" folder, labeled mt7622.

2. buy and install easytether pro on your android device.

3. turn on the usb debugging on your phone.

4. open the easytether app on the phone and plug in the phone to the router.

5. In OpenWrt configure the EasyTether network interface (tap-easytether) to use DHCP and make it part of your WAN zone.

for more clarification, you can see the easytether website instructions next to the openwrt 19.xx driver download

the driver is the mt7622 file. you should install this using stock gl.net firmware because if you flash the latest openwrt firmware and then try to install this driver, you will get errors

My cell carrier is USmobile with GSM network btw. and it works without any issues for atleast 8 hours straight. I didnt test longer than that as it is unnecessary.

also make sure that the cable used is a data-transfer and not a charge-only usb-a to usb-c cable. you can figure which is which if the connect the phone to a computer and the computer recognizes the phone as a phone and you can move pictures from the phone to the computer. this was the part that caused me alot of trouble.

These perform better than regular hot spots. You connect 2-3 devices on hotspots and you'll notice that it starts slowing down. GL iNet devices have the same features as bigger routers. Port Forwarding, Static routing, VPN, Dynamic DNS and more. I wouldn't use the GL iNet travel router for home use though.

you don't really need the app, but it makes it easier.
you can change the TTL param in the router, and get the same result.

This NOT for static house usage, its for traveling in a small space. It is not great for extending your wifi in a house. Get a mesh network
half right. This is fine as a primary router for many people, but if multiple devices are needed for expanded coverage then a mesh network solution would be preferable. This would work for extending the network in a non-mesh way, but for a 'dumb' task like that there are much cheaper options.

Unless the wifi you are connecting the router to is clued into its game, you don't need to worry about having to clone anything.
The router connects to the wifi and your device connects to the router. When you are connected to the router it proxies your requests through said router. If there is an automatic redirect to a captive portal, then whatever device you are on (phone, laptop, etc) will get redirected to the captive portal page just like it would if you connected to the WiFi SSID directly. Then you agree/interact with the captive portal and everything behind the router will start to work without any extra effort.
I have this router myself. I've used it on a cruise ship and multiple hotels in the last 30 days. The firmware is good and it will suit your needs for MOST situations.
This must have changed since earlier in it's product life.

just curious is this with the latest firmware update 4.6.2 that no longer need to clone MAC? Will be using this on an upcoming cruise. While I've used another GL.inet travel router on previous cruises, this will be the first with the Beryl.

Exactly. The point it's for traveling. I have same model & it always travels with me when I'm on the go.

You'd need PoE (there's diff standards depending on your switch) 48v to 5v (usb-c input).. Google is your friend

I created this [reddit.com]thread about that.

I updated the firmware of the Beryl on that trip because I was having troubles with it.

Excellent product but not too much of discount. But really good product ...

Go with original openwrt like here https://loganmarchione.com/2024/0...h-openwrt/ otherwise if you do not feel comfortable stay with original.

It's been a while since I did this, tried it yesterday on my GL-AR750S also set TTL=65 but still detected my hotspot usage, easytether says connection established and speeds are great after a while It reached my limit and slowed down, using oneplus N100 on T-mobile

Why not just bring your old router with you? It's free and you won't care about it if it breaks.

When you are at hotel. connect the router to hotel WiFi and connect your device, say phone, to the router. Captive portal will popup in your phone browser i supposed? What if the captive portal didn't pop up?
My device should be able to access the captive portal. I can also try accessing a non-encrypted site to get redirected to the captive portal.

I set the router MAC address to a non-default value.

Now that I think about it, I did have an issue where one device downloading Steam games slowed down the connection for other devices on the router. I might have to look into whether there's a feature that can deal with that automatically or updating the firmware.

  • This is more compact than my old routers.
  • I can power it using a USB-C power bank or standard wall adapter.
  • It's more powerful than my old routers. My old routers have less processing power and can't support higher speeds on a repeater.
  • It's still receiving feature/security updates.
  • It was easy to set up for my repeater use case. My home routers may not support this in a user friendly way.

I upgraded, but the process for connecting to captive portal sites is still a bit tricky. I was unable to connect to a wifi site at Hampton Inn, until I used the lobby guest wifi. But, the next day I connect immediately to a wifi at Sleep Inn. I would recommend downloading the trouble shooting FAQ on a laptop desktop to help walk through the process when trying to connect while on the road.

Don't forget to bring the included LAN cable when going to a hotel. A lot of the hotels have wired internet access. Just plug in the router and you're good to go.
