I see UL listing molded into the back side, it's got my approval!

As always, beware of no-name brands as well as ETL listed USB wall outlets. ETL is not quite as trustworthy as UL, and no-name brands do use counterfeit safety compliance markings, and something like this is a bit more dangerous than other in-wall devices (switches, dimmers, etc) since it involves having a tiny transformer inside where the primary coil is likely energized 100% of the time. I used to work at ETL and now I have PTSD from it, pardon my paranoia

Another note, these are sorta old tech, they're perfect for lower-wattage devices and charging older phones that can't negotiate those super fast charging wattages.

For that you're looking for "PD" (power delivery) models which are the current META. So, from the pictures these Insignia models look fairly deep which can be difficult to cram into a workbox (some USB charger outlets are much smaller and easier to fit, usually the really old 1 Amp, 5 Volt models).

These are a HUGE bargain in price, and I love that they're Insignia brand and UL listed, but consider that if they're already very deep in size, you may have a really hard time ramming them into a workbox (especially if the old outlet has 12 AWG wires) on an external wall that doesn't have a full depth box. And if you're up for a fight and you've got to do some cramming anyway, maybe upsell yourself to a fancier PD model that can do that really fast charging. Newer phones and devices can negotiate absurd voltages like 9-15V to get that good wattage and charge your phone from 0-50% battery disturbingly fast.

Anyway, I'm rambling again, this is a really good deal, just watch for depth and note that it isn't a fancy PD model.

Behind the scenes ETL is a horror show, I got the heck out of there years ago, they're cheaper for a reason. Part of the safety certification is quarterly surveillance which is really hit-or-miss there. So even if one of these fly-by-nights actually presents a valid design, spotty surveillance can negate that entirely. Among the insurance and fire investigation community ETL stands for Easy To List. I actually don't mind using appliances that ETL has listed as long as they're attended devices and preferably not something left plugged in 24/7. So having an energized transformer inside of a wall that was evaluated by ETL makes me too nervous

Clearance pricing since most of these are changing to USB-C but it's still a pretty good price if you are looking to change the outlets anyway, just double check to make sure you have enough room in the gang box.

UL and ETL are essentially the same thing. UL costs manufacturers more, but it doesn't make it better - they might pay more for marketing purposes.

Got a two pack of these a couple years ago and just installed one last month. Very easy to put in, not too large for an existing work box. Works well for nursery camera powered by USB.

Sometimes having things charge as quickly as possible is needed in which case I'll use a 20W USB-C wall charger on the go, but most of the time for overnight charging, these are just fine.

In the kitchen we have a Lutron decora amp USB-C combination receptacle and it's great for those times you need to charge a phone or tablet quickly.

You might want to consider that these are neither gfci nor afci, if you're looking to sell or worried about shock hazards near water.

Are these 15amp outlets? Can't seem to confirm on listing. It only states 3.6A on the USB.

Found it under Q&A. FYI.

Hi Brad, thank you for inquiring about our Insignia™ - 2 Pack - 2-Outlet In-Wall Outlet with 2 USB Ports. Yes, it would be compatible with your 12 gauge Romex. However, it is important to note the following electrical specification: • Receptacle rating: 15Amp, 125VA • USB rating: Two USB ports with total 3.6A, 5V DC • Line voltage: 125V AC @ 60Hz • Wire terminals: #14-#12 AWG I hope this helps. If you have any other questions/concerns, feel free to reach out. Have a nice day! - James | Insignia Support | https://www.bestbuy.com/site/bran...6746025285

Yup, ETL goes by what is submitted, UL really tests stuff... in their own labs, which is why it's more expensive, and takes longer. ETL is a rubber stamp as long as the design is signed off by a known testing lab... That's why China uses them, quick and easy, whereas UL might tell them, uh, this needs to be changed, etc.

In Canada, technically anything that's not cUL (UL Canada) rated isn't supposed to be legally attached to the electric grid... I'm sure it's not enforced, but that's code from my understanding.

Basically, you get what you pay for. UL is always the best way to go, especially on anything that's direct wired.

That's not a problem as long as there is one of those upstream on the circuit.
