Only good for lots of water in big pot. Anything else using OIL needs 750CFM and above. You have to pipe air out of the house not to the attic.
ok got it

Also to be noted, if you have higher than 400 CFM you need a make up air vent otherwise you'll get lots of negative pressure, and it'll start pulling in air from all the holes to the outside.
Negative pressure will cause exhaust from gas burning appliances such as hot water heater and furnace to backdraft which pulls carbon dioxide and monoxide into the house.

If you mostly do boiling, stew etc, it's enough and quiet. If you do fry, sear, stir fry, get 800 CFM or higher, and more importantly, with 8" vent.
If you have induction cooktop, this will be fine. The reviews on Samsung site look horrible though

I'd rather have a microwave/hood combo to really save space, wile keeping the cabinet above for storage space.

Or just have a really old house with no insulation and poorly sealing doors/windows, lol.

Really bad. You want an exhaust fan that has at least 700 to 800 CFM with minimum 6 inch pipe outlet for decent performance. Anything less than that you will see terrible results if you plan on cooking anything that produces odors or fumes.

Translation for normal people: this unit is useless if you cook often.

Who can do this job? Was thinking of get a powerful hood. Asked a lot handymen and they had no idea. The hood retailer had no idea as well.

Yeah.. we had a 1000cfm one installed without makeup air (didn't know about this, and contractor didn't tell us), you can open a window as a stop gap but very important point. Also agree that if you do serious cooking look for higher cfm.

I would also like to know. I requested a quote from a few kitchen remodeling contractors and none of them got back with me. I only have a range microwave with no duct work, so the thing is damn near useless.

Without an adequate size duct, a higher-CFM blower will encounter too much air resistance to work effectively. Smoke and steam will stay in your kitchen, as well as cooking odors, which is not ideal.

But if the size of your duct matches your ventilation power, your kitchen exhaust fan will do its job properly and quietly.

A good rule of thumb for estimating duct diameter and CFM requirements is:

400 to 600 CFM = 6" to 8" duct
700 to 900 CFM = 7" to 10" duct
900 to 1200 CFM = 8" to 12" duct
1200 and higher CFM = 10" and up duc
