If you buying these for OpenWRT, then it's a great deal.

If you don't know what OpenWRT is, stop now and don't buy this unless you really don't care about features. This device is likely to never ever get a single update from Linksys and it's basically a dead product. Linksys is just dumping them and there will be no support, no mesh, and you can't use the USB port for anything at all.

If you use this as a parent node, you can use other velop nodes as children with no issues. Add in app and everything. But if you want to use this LN1301 as a child, you must follow these steps from Rbtcordell on Slickdeals:

1-Setup your Main router completely.

2-Plug your child node using the wan port to the main router lan port.

3-Log into your main router web admin.

4-Click on CA at the bottom right.

5-Click on Connectivity and CA Router setup.

6-Click on both Add Wired and Add Wireless nodes buttons. Wait for the Add wireless button to re-enable.

7-Click Done adding Child Nodes and then Apply.

8-Now the child node light should start flashing purple and turn into a mesh mode when it turns blue.

9-Disconnect Ethernet and wait for blue light again.

10-Move node to desired location.

link to previous deal with lots of discussion. Seems like OpenWRT, Mesh with multiple nodes are all possible.

The hw is basically the same as the mx4200 with the ram and flash increased to 2gb and 1gb.
It's tri band with 2x2 2.4ghz, 2x2 5ghz, and 4x4 5ghz. All three are ax.
These seem to be mx4301 which originally had fortinet vpn fw and are now debranded without fortinet and fw without vpn.

I actually got this when it was a tad more expensive. I would say, I highly endorse this. It has all the bells and whistles you would want or need.

I haven't checked openWRT, but I'm also not insanely interested in modding my router - I use it for its core functionality, go figure.

There is no guarantee this will be mostly functional on openwrt (not supported by OpenWRT mainline yet)

Mesh works on these. Your information is dated by several weeks.

Even if you know what OpenWRT is and plan on using it on the router, you may want to stop now unless you don't really care about features. From what I can see from the OpenWRT developer threads on this model, they are not *quite* there yet. It may eventually get a robust build, but that could be months from now (or never).

That said, for $20 it may be worth the gamble. That is a heck of a value.

pretty cheap for a mesh system, buy 3 of these, at $20 each, that's $60 for a standard 3-node mesh. I am still running my TP-link deco M5, that is now going on 7 years now...this is tempting, but I really want to hold out until WiFi 7 is more common and cheaper

I upgraded to this last week, coming from the T-Mobile AC1900 router that used to be really popular on this site. I can't believe I waited as long as I did, everything is lightning fast with amazing coverage. I'm using the router straight out of the box, haven't even messed with openwrt yet.
