I think the major difference is the kit that you use - the one I found that works well has a great funnel and guide that doesn't have you brushing coffee off the rim, etc. Also a great guide for slapping on the sticker / I can press a dozen pods with my eyes closed.
I've gone through @ 700 re-uses, and I prefer the coffees that I press myself over the ones that Nespresso offers. If you like flavored coffee at all, for example, this is 1/8th to 1/3 the cost, a zillion more flavors than Nespresso will ever offer, and the coffee tastes better to boot.

Here's the trick with these: They come in 4 parts, holder, funnel, tamper, sealer.
Don't just use the sealer to seal the pod, use the funnel first, then double tap it with the sealer. Pod sticker will be sturdy as hell and hold up for as long as you want it to if you double press it.
EDIT: I'd also very heavily recommending getting a cheapo coffee scale; you can pick up one for like 10 or 15 bucks off of Amazon. I was amazed how much the quality and consistency improved when I started using a scale, eyeballing it doesn't work as well as you think with any reusable pod for any system.

These are refills where you just replace the 'top' of the pod - you clean and re-use any Nespresso pod and put a new aluminum sticker- very easy process. The actual 'replace the whole pod' with a metal pod or plastic pods aren't that great from what I've read. As far as stickers beyond the refill kit, just about any will do, I get whatever is cheapest - they range from .07 to .11 USD cents per sticker.
Nespresso in general likes darker roasts, but you can get away with medium roasts just fine if you do a fine grind at .50 ounces
