If you can find it somewhere (a local library?) John Cleese reads an abridged version of the Screwtape Letters and it is fantastic. A great choice.

Thanks, OP

This book is what fundamentalist Christians refer back to when they say "You cannot have morals without God, because God is morality" (or "the tao" as he calls it). It is his worst piece of writing and contains circular, illogical and absolutive ideologies.

His other books are much better reads.

It's rather that a recognizable moral law, something like "it's wrong to murder" has a foundation somewhere.

Without God, he argues that wrongness has no foundation, it's merely a social/relational practicality. He attempts at least a *reasonable* argument to explain how murder is wrong, period, without appealing to some practical reason why it's "wrong" to murder.

For my part, I thought this book was fantastic and challenging in its approach.
