It's not a perfect game, with the usual EA buggy weirdness you get these days, but it scratches the golf game itch better than any game since the '00s Tiger Woods PGA Tour games. (Caveat: I play it on PC, previously with a GTX 2070 on medium and now a GTX 4080 on high settings.)
The learning curve isn't super steep. You can certainly jump in and learn the basics in a game or two, and there are training challenges you can start with. There's even a 3-click shot option if you struggle with stick swing. But it does give you the feel of actually having to build up your golf skills. I have ~100 hours in the game, and still haven't mastered it on Tour mode, much less simulation mode. For perspective, I was tournament-level good at the old Tiger Woods games, which are the most similar. (Only sports/competition games I've ever been good at! ๐)
The physics and difficulty have advanced a bit, though; it's not trivial to shoot -18 or better once you get good with the controls, although I play with more realism turned on than the old games supported. If you prefer the more arcadey feel, Arcade and Pro difficulty play a bit more like the old games.
IMHO, it strikes a great balance between feeling like you have built up some real skill, but still providing a challenge every time. And you can dial the challenge up and down a bit to stay in that sweet spot, or give yourself more of an edge so you feel like you're golf's anime superhero.
Move forward and slash/miss. Back up to avoid attack. Try to attack again. Another miss/block. Dash/dodge. Parry enemy attack to get fast counter attack. Oh, waitโฆ you can't attack fast enough after a parry in order to hit the person before they dodge again, because you essentially get stunned with them. Eventually get lucky hit.
Each fight just goes on like that. I haven't played it since it came out, so maybe they've made the combat more responsive since then, but I doubt it.

My only concern with the console version is that I refuse to buy psn anymore as it stands, and I worry about how much content I may be missing out on because of it.
