I have 22,000 points/miles with United Airlines. I have no clue how to use them "perfectly"..
Most flights where I am going are cheaper by other airlines.

22K points/miles is not much. But, it will get you there one way. You need at least 25K or 35K just in case. There are flights within the US that you can fly 12.5K miles each way but you have to find the right flights there and back. Also, there are taxes/fees that one would pay when applying or using points/miles on a ticket.

Yeah, true. There are few flights for reasonable prices. But I don't fly to those destinations hehe.
Was looking for some international flights (central/south america) and United usually higher atleast 30-50%.

Yeah I hear you. Most of the time it is easier just to pay for a flight to central/south america. There are a lot of ways/tricks in tracking cheap flights. I don't fly much either. When I do, I use what is available to give me a reminder/alerts if the dates when I do want to fly out is lower then the previous times I searched for.

How long did it take for them to text you the discount code once you 'YES'd' in?

The discount code drops via text on 8/19 and is limited to the first 819 redemptions, so it will be a race tomorrow to redeem the code

You might be able to get a good redemption for a 1 way economy flight at least. Then book the other leg using cash.

Check the reward charts on their website! Don't go off of the cash price you find on google. The redemption for points might be much lower.

For example one way flight form SFO-DTW is only 15k points for economy (inc carry on). Cash price right now is $349 for economy basic and $399 for regular economy. That's an extremely good redemption rate especially for economy flights. Although I have a feeling that they temporarily inflated the prices because the flights were going for $219 a few days ago.

If I eat hot and spicy potato chips, I will honor/celebrate two holidays. Awesome.
