items I just bought last week were $37.73, $25.73 & $58.73.
This week they're $63.73, $46.73 & $82.73...
I hate how REI always increases the prices of Outlet items during these "20% off coupon days".

Google is your friend, from the Seattle Times:

"REI said Tuesday it lost $311 million in 2023 — a tumultuous year that included layoffs and operations restructuring at the Seattle-founded outdoor equipment retailer. Revenues were $3.76 billion in 2023, down 2.4% from the previous year."

every time i go to rei to buy climbing shoes they never have my size so i just order online somewhere else. they'd make like 400 a year from me just from shoes if they ever had any in stock. my friends share similar experiences

Code isn't working for me. My item ends in $.73 and it says the backpack is ineligible. Couple that with reports saying the prices got hiked up during these coupon sales leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

edit: I'm a dingus and didn't see the coupon is valid on the 23rd.

[QUOTE=inferno1;172433853]"I think REI lost a lot of money last year"
You have any proof to back that up

REI employee here 🙋🏻 ♂️ Company has been in loss since last 2 years, turns out the corporate executives running the show, are only filling their pockets. Layoffs happened this month, more to follow.

Rei is great if you have a specific niche/patented item to buy that only they sell.

Their lax return policy has got to go. 1 year for returns is too generous and leading to abuse. People are just "renting". 30 days for returns will boost them back to profitability.
They're too pricey to not have a decent return policy, especially when camping gear is often used for the first time several months after purchase. If I buy a $600 tent for Christmas and find out it has a bad seem in May, they damn well better take the return.

Their return policy (which actually used to be better) is half the reason anyone shops there.

You have any proof to back that up or just sheer conjecture?

personally, i find some of the REI branded clothing items to be pretty good values. definitely doesnt work for the "cool" crowd. their prices and stock in the higher end brands is pretty ass, especially my local REIs.

People talking about high prices, what items does REI price above market price? I'm sure there are some segments like propane canisters that you can buy at Walmart, but most of their items are priced the same as the brands website, Backcountry, Moosejaw, or any other outdoor retailers price. The items might be too expensive but generally that is the item, not REI.
Someone else already said but the 20% off anything coupon is never available at Labor Day, it is always 3x a year in March, May, and November. You can see this if you google "rei sales calendar"
I have been watching an REI outlet item price for the last week (Gregory Alpaca 40l) and it's still the exact same price as last week at $99.73

One of the biggest ways REI spend cash is paying dividends to coop members even when the company isn't profitable. Dividends are paid back to members in the form of "Member rewards," 10% of a member's total eligible spend with REI.

Normally, a for profit company would cut dividend (see NYCB and Walgreens) when cash flow is problematic. I think REI needs to as well. Just my two cents running my own handyman business while investing lol.

Not sure why so many people hate REI. They sell great gear and back it up with great return policy. I constantly shop their sales and get great name brand gear for nearly half off multiple times a year. Ive gotten $200 sleeping pads for $40 during these sales in previous years. REI branded gear is usually a great value too. I have bought multiple REI tents (backpacking and carcamping) during sales for massive discounts that have held up through everything and were half of what other brands charge. Too each their own and all but REI is like my favorite store.
