Whether you need the auto-empty feature depends entirely on your situation. People who have pets that shed and a lot of carpeting swear by it, saying that the bin fills up every day. I have a pretty big house with hardwood floors and no pets and can go 2+ weeks without emptying.

One thing I would consider is how neat you and your kids are. The thing about robot vacs is that they have rollers that will go under the couch and under the bed and pick up all kinds of things that can clog up the vacuum. I look under my vac weekly and can't count the number of times I've found hair bands, jewelry, paper receipts, face masks, string, rubber bands, even socks wrapped around the roller and/or blocking the intake -- not to mention the hair and strings wrapped around the main brush or the side brush or the wheels . So while auto-empty sounds nice, I just don't get the notion that you can "set it and forget it" for months at a time. It's a mechanical device that requires attention to run efficiently. My 2 cents.

Here is a handy feature comparison:

I have been using this for years. Amazing device, works great. The mop feature is not great, I'd rather have a bigger dirt bin. It also verbally complains every few minutes about non OEM filters while it sweeps as if it was a disgruntled coworker.

Great insight. My kids are a mess and I honestly had never considered this LOL. While this will be just for downstairs, which is mostly where the dogs are, I'm sure even their thick hair will need attention on it frequently. Our downstairs area only has one section of carpet (medium pile) and a thicker rug in the living room. If I can tell it not to do the rug, I'd be fine vacuuming that myself. Mostly I just don't want dog hair building up in the corners, like it inevitably does, or my kids crumbs all over the floor in the kitchen.
So if you need it to have mopping, I think the only options are to have ones that clean the mop heads each time and auto empty the dirty water. If they're messy too, having both lidar for mapping, but a front camera for obstacle avoidance is highly recommended. You can often get refurbished models online too and some even let you move it to multiple floor levels to clean too.

$198 with Id.me discount. This is the first time considering a robotic vacuum. Is there a hack to replace third party mops or make your own?

I paid $359 a year ago and love it, I don't mind having to empty it manually. To me the added costs of the empty bin and bags wasn't worth it
Any idea about grass clipping? My dogs drag them in and they can get some of the longer clippings, like 2-3".

So I have one of these but the newer S8 version. The navigation is game changing as I owned several iRobot vaccums previously and you can actually trust this thing to do a complete job. App is good and software works well.

The difference with this one is it only has one roller underneath as opposed to two. I would guess that would lead to more issues with jamming. If you have pets and use this to control hair I might recommend paying more for the two roller versions.

No obstacle avoidance on this. Q8 has that but $100 more than this. If you always ensure to not leave anything on the floor, not even a sock, before starting a cleaning cycle then you don't need obstacle avoidance.

It's the cables that get mine stuck. Or yarn. Mind you I have the s7 max v plus or whatever that has obstacle avoidance. However still love it.

Really have no issues with jamming at all unless it pulls like a full sheet of a paper towel

IMO the Q5 Pro is the one to get if you don't mind emptying it yourself and don't care about mopping. It has the second highest suction rating of any Roborock (last time I checked), dual rollers, and a very large onboard bin. I've been using a Q5 pro for the last half year and it has been incredible. The Q5 pro is the same $210 after ROBOROCKS and I just bought a second one. Thanks for the heads up!

OMG you have 3 kids and you can run nightly? I'm lucky if I can do it twice weekly because my 4 young kids can't keep their stuff off the floor.
