The micro USB port is not for powering items, it is if you want to use this device to charge your M12 battery (usually you don't want to do this unless you need a mild solution for charging an M12 battery in your car). I think everyone here will just use one of their regular m12 chargers to charge their batteries, making the micro USB port irrelevant.
There's a standard USB2.1 port that is used for this device providing power to USB devices (which is what most of us would do with this).
As a note, the new model replaces the 1-way charging port (micro USB) on this with a 2-way USB-C port (charge your M12 or provide power from M12 to another device) that has higher throughput in both directions (not something I'd need because I use this only for small loads).
