Finely, precisely machined parts, like spindles and bearings, to tight tolerances.

Cheap reels use plastic bushings and spindles, etc.

You can also see a marked improvement in features, like drag capability and smoothness.

Of course, all of this is subjective. If you fish twice a month, you care more than the person fishing twice in a summer.

Legit question- what makes good reels so expensive? Is it just about durability? Will a "good' reel catch fish better than a $20 rod/reel from Walmart if it's use is just for some casual fishing on a weeks vacation each summer?

They feel better retrieving, but at least with a spinning setup, cheap reels cast basically as well as good ones.

If your casual fishing over the summer is for 10lb+ fish, cheap reels might be problematic. For the average bank fishing, the difference here is feel and longevity.

Higher quality, higher tolerance parts, better fit and finish, more and/or better bearings. The drag should be better, more linear and reliable. Will it necessarily catch more fish? Hard to say, but there's less of a chance of a malfunction in the reel that would lead to losing a fish.

Good deal but I bought a rod from West Marine before and I received an empty box. They replaced it of course but that was just the dumbest thing ever.

Well put. Cheap reels will catch fish but they might not be usable next season or two seasons down the road.

I think I got the last model 2500 because I told a friend at work and pulled it up again and the 2500 was not select-able anymore.

Yeah, last night I had tried to order the 2500 and it wouldn't let me. I have quite a few 2500 reels so I'm ok with the 3000 for this price.

Ordered a 3000. The 2500 wasn't available anymore. Added some braided line and circle hooks to bump up the total and get free shipping!

While the positives stated by others are true, high-quality reels can also be heavy. If you're doing the kind of fishing that requires a lot of casting, a heavy reel can be tiring. That said, this reel weighs 9 oz. for a the 3000 model which is not bad, although I have seen lighter reels.
