The definition of sardine is:
sardine. 1. : any of several small or immature fishes of the herring family.

Sprats are in the herring family. Generally before we blame the government for something or blame people for being disingenuous we should at least look for how what they're proposing might be true in some context. We can avoid a ton of misunderstandings that way.

I stopped buying this brand because what I got looked like shredded tuna in the cans rather than whole sardines. They should rename it bits and pieces.
Chicken of the sea sardines are usually avaialbe in the $1 range or less when onsale, and I have never had an issue with getting whole fish from the tin.

I was going to object that it clearly says Sardines on the label, but sure enough it says "Ingredients: Sprats"...how the heck do they get away with labeling it Sardines?? Sardines are Sardina pilchardus, while sprats are Sprattus sprattus, two different species. It's like labeling a can "Salmon" and then in small type "Ingredients: 100% Tuna". Gov't 'protects' us from every imaginary 'threat' but doesn't regulate blatant food fraud

Sorry Rokket...like your other stuff but these sardines are horrible tho they may be a good buy for some. But if you like sardines, these are the worst. I love sardines. I would never eat these again.

I eat 3-4 cans a week (as recommended for heart health) and I've never had broken sardines/sprats. Either I'm very lucky or you're unlucky. I will admit, however, that the ones packed in water are more delicate than the ones in oil.

I only saw the coupon for the Mustard. The Water and Oil ones are the same price, but no coupon.

Try looking at the other varieties. The Water, Oil and Mustard varieties are the same price, but I only saw the 10% coupon for the Mustard.

No real difference in flavor and just a little less protein and fatty acid than sardines. But sprats costs less so they are a better value nutritionally. Since I'm eating fatty fish for heart health, sprats are just fine for me. And FYI, sprats fit under the general definition of sardines which is why they can be legally called sardines.

I've never had broken "bits and pieces" and I've been buying these for years. I've also bought Chicken of the Sea. No difference.

I've eaten over 100 cans in the past 2 years (10 orders via Slickdeals) and i can't remember ever getting shredded fish. Eating a can right now and ready fish is whole.

Same here. Two boxes, almost all whole headless little fishes. Occasionally a broken one, but never shredded.

Does it say "ALL small fishes in the herring family"? Nope. Any of several. Meaning the ones that are Sardines, not necessarily that being in the herring family and being small automatically makes a fish a sardine. If you want a legal definition - there's not one. So, yeah, by that token, they can call it whatever they want, and that's why they do. I'm sure you can find elsewhere that someone calls a Sprat a Sardine. Doesn't make it correct. Googling will also give several sources specifying a sprat is not a Sardine, I'm not a fish lawyer, I just expect my can of Sardines to contain Sardines.
