CR recommending an LG refrigerator? That tells me all I need to know about CR since I already know too much about crappy LG fridges.

This model has a linear compressor that is subject to a class action lawsuit.
Avoid it like the plague.

How do you know when it has the linear compressor?

In this case, it said so on LG's website for this model although LG has been scrubbing references to "linear compressor" from its website, so you sometimes can't know for sure.

The faulty design was addressed long ago, its still a linear design. Its hard to say if the new design is in the latest batches.

I lost trust on LG fridges. Mine didn't last 5 years after I replaced working GE fridge that was more than 15 years old. Also, my friend's LG fridge compressor broke recently.

It's all the "green changes" done to consumer fridges in the last decade. They all have to be Inverter designs with complicated fragile electronics in order to comply with the energy efficiency regs, but then they only last 5-10 years . Old fridges used simple and reliable but energy inefficient AC motors.

Where are your sources for "the faulty design was addressed long ago"?

The Linier compressors come with a 10 year warranty now. LG is better then any Frigidaire/Whirlpool you'll find nowadays those feel like plain junk. Especially the Whirlpool icemaker design takes up literally half the top shelf.

My LG fridge has been going strong for 8 years without a single issue. I guess I'm lucky.

The linear compressor comes with a 10-year warranty, but the labor to install the new compressor is $800+

Your LG fridge probably doesn't use a linear compressor.
