Doesn't seem like marmot makes an instant up type tent, correct?

Is it just me or have backpacking tents gotten a lot lighter and a lot cheaper? Less than $200 for a <3 lb 3 person tent?

Was this a trend that was already happening and just got disrupted by COVID-era demand? Or is there a patent that suddenly expired?

Good deal for the Superalloy. I bought it this summer at a similar price, and most of the competition is over $300. It's my 3rd Marmot tent, I really like the quality, features, and ergonomics.

I think it was already happening--I've noticed the same.

My mid-grade backpacking tent purchased in 2014 is like 4.5lb minimum trail weight and above 5 when you include stakes and storage bags or a footprint. It has been a pretty nice tent, but a few years ago it became clear that it should be replaced if I was going to do any more big backpacking trips...the weight suddenly seemed like a budget tent.

The MSRP on that tent was $350 when it was released (although I bought it off slickdeals for $150...) which is $480 in 2024 dollars! $480 today is enough to buy you a high end tent...REI has a clearance Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 [rei.com] ($450 MSRP) for $315...with a minimum trail weight under 2.2lb!!! And that's a pretty full featured tent--vestibule, multiple doors, storage, extra headroom--not some minimalist tent.

I think it is a combo of a couple things:
1. Improved materials (e.g. seeing more "fancy" fabrics used by the major brands)
2. Improved designs--more designs using split-yoke poles or partial length poles to provide good interior area without having like 5 full-length poles.
3. Competition--big brands pushing each other on #1 and #2 but also DTC companies innovating and offering good prices.

I've been considering theDurston X-Mid 2. [durstongear.com]. It retails for $269 and is a pretty roomy setup that comes in under 2LBs minimum trail weight. Granted it is a trekking pole tent--but I'm happy to carry trekking poles if the weight is essentially "free". (Also, they sell an ultralight carbon pole you can use as an alterantive to pitch the tent if you don't want to use trekking poles).

This is a tent that didn't exist 10 years ago...being sold DTC for a super low price. Older trekking pole tesigns like TarpTent were finicky and expensive...this thing is supposed to be pretty easy to use, comfy, and affordable.

Huh? Anyone get this? I have the same price on the item page as the checkout page. There is no extra 25% off taken off in cart. IT'S THE SAME PRICE!!!

Wording on the marmot site suggests the same thing. An extra 25% off IN YOUR CART
Quote :
25% Off Entire Purchase
Keep your sends going long after summer ends with 25% Off your entire cart through 9/2.
Real bummer... Was expecting another $50 to come off my order when viewing my cart... Now it's all being removed.

When I was on the site, I got the impression that the extra 25% off was already in the listed price. "Extra 25% Off Sale Items. Pricing Shown"

I agree that it's a bit confusing/misleading.

(I know you don't have answers or are responsible, it's just that everywhere says EXTRA 25% SALES ITEMS and then when you go to your cart there is no EXTRA savings.)

Site says EXTRA 25% off your cart. That means you see the price on the item page and then in the cart there is an EXTRA savings.

Quote from website homepage :

On the cart page it says

Quote from website cart page :
Extra 25% Off Sale Items. Pricing Shown
EXTRA 25% off sale items. Price is $100 crossed out to $75. Where is the EXTRA 25% off the $75 sale?

--------

Additional bummer is the "sign up for 15% off" doesn't work on sale items, which they don't tell you before you sign up. All they say is "(offers are for first purchase only)", nothing about restrictions on sales items.

Entire thing feels like a bait and switch.

Please let me know what tent you end up getting. I have similar requirements in what I'm looking for in a tent.

Called them about the "extra 25% off in cart" and lady said multiple people are contacting them about that and they are sending reports up to supervisors.

Also inquired about the "extra 15% off email sign up" and she said I can use it on my NEXT order instead. I said that's not acceptable. It says "on first purchase".

In the end she agreed that the "25% off your cart" is misleading and the "15% off your first purchase" is also misleading, so she is gave me a magical code for extra 15% off my final price.

I got 2 of the 3 items I wanted, but what a bad experience. All the "save 15%" and "save 25%" off are straight up lies. They hope you pick your items, get to your cart and not care about the "EXTRA 25% OFF YOUR CART"
