Yes, Linksys LN1301 is a terrific router with 2 GB RAM and 1 GB of flash. Insane! I thought my Netgear R7800 with 512 MB RAM is pretty good until the specs on LN301 blows the R7800 out of the water and is a tri-band router as well!

With wireless mesh (instructions below), it's one heck of a deal and blows DECO AX5000 deal out of the water, imho.

EDIT: UPDATED instructions for enabling MESH (thanks to @rbtcordell for the original source):

1-Setup your Main router completely.

2-Plug your child node using the wan port to the main router lan port, wait for a solid purple light on the child node before proceeding

3-Log into your main router web admin.

4-Click on CA at the bottom right.

5-Click on Connectivity and CA Router setup.

6-Click on both Add Wired and Add Wireless nodes buttons. Wait for the Add wireless button to re-enable.

7-Click Done adding Child Nodes and then Apply.

8-Now the child node light should start flashing purple and turn into a mesh mode when it turns blue.

9-Disconnect Ethernet and wait for blue light again.

10-Move node to desired location.

set it as an Access Point.
1. Disable DHCP (optional)
2. Set the device to Bridge Mode under Connectivity tab
3. Connect cable from your router to a LAN port.
4. Get some nail polished and a round sticker to cover the annoying flashing right light.
5. Click the 'AC' at the bottom of the page to see the detail configurations of wifi.

Did ddwrt change how they were installing? Earlier on it was wiping out both partitions making it very difficult to revert. Openwrt was leaving the other partition alone so you can switch back to stock if desired.
ddwrt suggests 3 flashes, even openwrt wants to flash both partitions as in PR.
It's totally unnecessary but as I never used a dual-boot router before this is very confusing.

Anyway, I think we should just flash once, and always from Linksys ROM to be safe.

We have neither v1 or v2 of the MX4200. I believe there is only one variant of our MX4300.

Installation instructions:

0. Get this file: https://github.com/testuser7/open...actory.bin

1. Open Linksys Web UI - http://192.168.1.1/ or http://10.65.1.1/ depending on your setup.

2. Login with your admin password. The default password can be found on a sticker under the device.

3. To enter into the support mode, click on the "CA" link and the bottom of the page.

4. Open the "Connectivity" menu and upload the squash-factory image with the "Choose file" button.

5. Click start. Ignore all the prompts and warnings by click "yes" in all the popups.

6. The Wifi radios are turned off by default. To configure the router, you will need to connect your computer to the LAN port of the device.

7. SSH into your router as user "root" and no password. By default, the IP address for the router would be 192.168.1.1

8. Make sure your router is connected to the internet (WAN port is connected to your ISP). Then in the router CLI, type "opkg update", press enter. Once finished, type "opkg install luci" and press enter. Once the command completes, reboot the router or power cycle.

9. Now you should be able to access Luci by going to 192.168.1.1 in your browser.

I followed this instruction, and I can't access Luci by going to 192.168.1.1 . It does provide internet through the MX4300 fine. So the router function is working properly. It is directly connected to the internet as well. I checked the gateway, and it does say 192.168.1.1 . Anyone has any idea what could be the problem?

there is no luci in this build, you need to ssh into the router to install luci, then you'll get web management on openwrt.

Yeah. I followed all the way to 9 and installed Luci via SSH. That's why I'm alittle confused.
I guess I'll try the process on another MX4300 and see how it goes first.

I am stuck on step8. Somehow I can't get internet even though its internet port is connected. opkg update or ping google.com is failing.

any idea how to revert back to the original rom?
Darn, sorry that happened.
The MX4300 has two firmwares loaded. You overwrote one of them uploading OpenWRT. You should be able to switch back to the other firmware partition by turning the router OFF using the power switch on the bottom, then back on. 4 times. On the 4th or 5th time (I am hazy on the details), the router should switch back to the first firmware partition.

EDIT: please read the steps to switch to the other partition here: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/openw...86477/1644
This link also contains info on why the upgrade might not have worked for you. I previously didn't know that there are 2 possible variants of our router, the Homewrk and Linksys version. You may need to flash the other version.

I'll have to read up on this MESH stuff. I have a small place so basically run stock AP firmware . Got a little refurb Eero mesh that I like but doubt they mesh with this deal.

Overdue for update, only on 200Mbps Home 5G and replacing that old ASUS 1900 from years ago that was a deal at $99 but never got firmware support. Not going to flash anything.. and for $15 this will be nice swap. . Not about to read up on 50 pages of trouble shooting tips here. Wink

Make sure your DNS server is set. https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-us...figuration

And if you're plugging it into another router, I would suggest plugging it into a LAN port on the Linksys.

I was able to do it in stock firmware without issues. I setup the main node in bridge mode with the cable from my primary router to the WAN port of main node. I then connected the second/child node's WAN port to my primary router. Then followed the steps in CA menu to add wired/wireless child node. Led turned blinking purple and then solid blue.

Child node got configured same as the main node ie in bridge mode, with same SSIDs/passwords etc.

I'm able to access both main and second Linksys units using the http://linksysxxxxx.local link. Both my Linksys nodes are wired to my primary router.

just tagging along, got the woot deal but both treads are useful for basic use. I forgot to install that android WiFi Analyzer app to check strength. I'll do that on my old AC1900 before I swap. Didn't want to mess with it during football. SNF looks pretty good on Peacock even with my pokey 100Mbps 5G Home. Verizon sent me a free extender but this router would be more useful.

I've got two of these, but all attempts to setup the second one as a node have failed. I've followed the instruction, did anyone else run into this issue?

Setup your Main router completely.
Plug your child node using the wan port to the main router lan port, wait for a solid purple light on the child node before proceeding.
  • -I've tried plugging the ethernet of the secondary to ports 1,2, or 3 on the main router and all with the same result

Click Done adding Child Nodes and then Apply.
  • It never starts flashing purple, it just stays the same solid purple color.
Now the child node light should start flashing purple and turn into a mesh mode when it turns

Double check your Ethernet cable that you have the WAN of child plugged into the LAN of the parent. Also, try a different cable as someone else encountered a bad cable preventing the mesh from configuring properly.
