Lots of people are using Home Assistant now. Best done using a dedicated pc and a zwave controller. An old desktop mini would be perfect for the job, but NUCs and those N series mini PCs are also popular. Or RasPi 4 or 5 could get you started.

Setup is a bit techie, but the app is mature and documentation is pretty good these days.

Amen to Home Assistant! There's no reason to use the RPi for it any more. Buy a small form factor microPC and it will be a lot more robust (lots of articles about RPi flash failures). Get a USB stick from Zooz (maybe on sale), and you'll have a great setup. I was so hesitant to migrate away from Vera, but finally pulled the trigger (wasn't painless), but not looking back!

Mini PC connected to your network and then you can access home assistant from any device at its IP address.

SmartThings is the entry and HomeAssistant is the end game for smart home. What can't it do.

I bought the hubitat off of ebay but also been intrigued with HA. Do you still have to pay the $5 monthly fees to use voice control? I also know there's a long route to go through to avoid but not sure if that's still the case.
You are correct - there is a longer route, but there is never any "have to pay" for HA.

The $5 is merely an option if you want to get to voice control with a few dead simple clicks.

By not paying the $5, one can totally achieve the same - setup your own environment yourself so that your HA would integrate with Google Assistant or Alexa, get the API keys and authentication going. You can also integrate with ChatGPT and do other fancier stuff, and that's not all - if you want to and know how to, you could even roll your own language model locally and do the whole voice control thing within the 4 walls of your house, in a way that you get to decide the wake words, what to do, etc., without any of your voice leaving your house and feeding the Google or Amazon mega machine.

So is it for everyone? No. Habitat still has its place (and quirks). Z-Net probably has its place also but can't comment on that.
I ran into limitations with Hubitat, and went to Home Assistant to get to the possibilities I want, and never look back.
Also, it is interesting that people in this thread (me included) are not actually talking about the deal. haha. 😀

Bonus points, there's a seller on eBay liquidating a bunch of 7's for 20 bucks each. I'm slowly migrating from Vera to Home Assistant myself, but I've been using the Hubitat as a transitional hub until the HA is ready.
I bought one of those off ebay a couple months ago (paid $15+$10 shipping). I switched from Vera and I'm very happy so far.

i'm really torn on whether i should waste $20 with shipping for temp sensors, or buy the $25 hubitat C7 off ebay and use 99 cent aliexpress temp sensors instead...

Anyone have experience with the 800 series zwave usb stick? Thinking about switching from Hubitat to dedicated stick for my home assistant box. Worth it or are there better options available elsewhere?

It's great - better than what SmartThings was. Once installed, it can be used as a sensor for automations.
For example, I have an automation that detects my wife's phone charging wirelessly after 10pm. That means we're going to bed, so the automation fires off things like closing garage door, locking doors, turning off any music, turning off the ice machine, turning off our lamps, and finally turning the alarm on.

I have it with my HA setup. It works flawlessly with HA and all my devices except one - my Schlage Zwave door lock which refuses to pair with it.

Weird. I have 4 of the Schlage Connect door locks connected to my ZST39 stick.

I have a 500 series Aeotec usb I use in parallel and they seem to work equally well.

Currently on SmartThings. For people using the mini PC HA setup, how do you handle zigbee devices. The sticks I see are mainly ZWave. My setup is a mix of Zigbee and ZWave.

Add a zigbee stock. Easier to find and cheaper than zwave

It's super simple, and you'll have to update to your config, but here's the yaml, for what it's worth:

Thesmartesthouse will run a Black Friday sale, but the chances of the prices being significantly less are pretty small (from my experience). Maybe you save $20 over the 10 devices? All depends on if you want them now or in early December.

Thank you for the response! I don't really need them till early December - so I guess I will just wait.

I bought a no-name smart ceiling fan from Amazon. App for that smart fan is only available from a overseas website which I did not want to install. Will I be able to use any of the offerings in this thread or any other device to make the existing fan receiver and remote to work with my Home Assistant.

What is required for ceiling fan/light control replacing a simple power on/off switch? I currently have several ceiling fan/lights that are controlled via RF remote receivers installed at the fan, but would like to replace these switches with actual Z-Wave switches that can control both. Does Zooz have a solution for this?
