How decent is the case? Do the sockets from the lid fallout everytime you open it?

I have the 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 set and the sockets "click" into their slots. The only time they ever fall out is if I didn't push them all the way into the case.

I love my Tekton tools but HF wins in this one. HF is cheaper and you get more sockets. I have hand tools from both places.

Quinn $69
6mm- 24mm
1/4 in to 1 in

Tekton $95
8mm -19mm
5/16in - 3/4in

As far as quality goes I would say they are pretty similar.

Nah. These are tarted up overpriced Pittsburgh sockets.

So for those uninformed about sockets these are essentially nicer chromed Pittsburgh pro sockets which are typically on par with Tekton. To the person saying they are Pittsburgh sockets they are very wrong. All Pittsburgh sockets are China made not Taiwan and more in line with Husky. Not a bad set to have especially if starting out. The downsides you can't order single sockets when you lose one so it's the gambit you run for a better price set

So are Tekton's no-frill plain looking sockets. Seriously, Tekton has jacked up its price so much for so long that it needs a reality check.

Bummer I'm not near any locations. But separately I'm not a heavy user -- just a homeowner who occasionally needs a socket wrench. Is this the type of set I should be looking for? I'm confused about the size range and especially imperial vs metric. Wouldn't I sometimes need both? Looking for a recommendation.

Pretty much all modern cars are pure metric with still a small handful of trucks accessories using SAE. Now older vehicles and still lots of small around the house nuts and bolts will be SAE so this is a nice starter set to cover all your bases. If you really get into cars you'll want a 1/2" metric set for suspension components but most of the time a long handled (11-12") 3/8 ratchet will suffice except for very stubborn lug nuts.

So, the person who responded to you seems to have ignored the info you provided about not knowing what you will need this for, but want something for when you do. Even at this price it's to expensive and overkill for what you will be using it on. I guarantee you won't be touching that 1 inch socket, and when you are, you may need an impact rated one with a 1/2 impact anyway. Since you have little, or maybe nothing, a whole big set makes more sense than just this 3/8th even though it has every socket and in a deep form as well.

You should check the lowes kobalt 277pc set for $99 deal. Waiting for a similar husky set to drop in price works too. If you won't want to take up much space, and want more useful sockets than filler, the harbor freight Pittsburgh 225 piece mechanics set might be best. For the harbor freight stuff you will need to wait for a sale and I don't know the low prices on them anymore. I have the 301 piece Pittsburgh set, but whenever I do anything on that needs sockets outside or in the garage I am always grabbing a very old around 100pc crescent set I bought when I was still young. It's not often I need to go to the bigger set, but when I do it's usually for a deeper socket or the extensions.

Now if you are really just looking for generic, they sell sets that come with a hammer, pliers, clamps, sockets, etc that might be better. They are cheaper and you will definetely need to buy something else to fill them out, but cramming it from a bedroom closet to do anything basic lke out together furnature, replace a water cut off, hang something, or replace annoutlet or fixture? Totally will work, you just might not have the perfect tool for the job, and can easily run into a bolt you don't have a socket for... but you do have an adjustable wrench!

I hope this helps, and good luck with picking the perfect choice for you.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response. I must admit this is awfully confusing given that socket sets seem to be priced from like $20 to $200. I had overlooked the Kobalt deal because at a glance it looked like a complete toolkit and not mainly a socket set. Would you still recommend that to somebody who already has a cheap multi-bit screwdriver wrenches and allen wrenches? I'm a little concerned about the quality of that case holding 277 pieces, and usability is something I'm willing to pay for (good compact case, easy to organize, easy to read markings). Again, thank you!
