All the while, the product pages only mention a 40% (and 35%) discount with terms stating a $20 max discount.
Edit: It's a game. You've gotta experiment. Some items and quantities trigger the $20 limit earlier than others.
Edit: I snagged three bags of Blue Buffalo Tastefuls dry cat food (1 Weight Control, 2 Multi Cat) in one order with the full 60% discount. Sweet! Nice glitch. Thanks, OP!

I added 1 bag of dry food (like OP said) as an autoship and then increased the amount in the cart until the discount dropped from the higher amount to $20. In this case, once I increased it to 4, the discount dropped to $20.
Then I removed it all from the cart and moved on to the wet food. I added the Pate variety pack with Salmon (qty of 1 like OP) as and autoship. In the cart, I increased the quantity 1 and a time and it was still giving me the large discount at 8 boxes! Maybe more would have worked but the dry food was what I was really after. I emptied the cart again.
I then added 1 dry food to cart via autoship, and increased it to 3 in the cart (because 4 caused the big discount to not apply). Then I added 1 wet food via autoship, and increased it 1 at a time. Once it got to three, the total discount dropped to $20.
Finally, I repeated the above to have 3 dry food and 2 wet food and placed the order.

It worked for me but had to fiddle with it numerous times. You do one subscribe and save when adding to cart, and then increase the amount in the cart by one. Find the 'right' number it caps at, if you add more than that number, it'll increase to the normal price. (Mine was 11.) It brought my total of $159.39 down to $53.83.

The discounts are insane. To add to that though, when I first got my puppy I got her blue Buffalo since it was top shelf food. Everytime she pooped, blood would follow along with the poop. I got really worried and was freaking out. I changed the dog food to PerSmart's brand and this was the solution. I now get Authority with kibble 30lb bags. She loves her kibble. No more blood in poop.
