i took zipair with my family in June SFO-NRT. If you don't expect blankets, pillows, food, water etc. Then it's totally fine. In 10 hours you will be in Japan. We bought some food and brought it on the airplane, it was totally fine. I would take it again. Budget, no frills airline, bring your own entertainment, laptop, tablet with videos/games and the time will fly by quick. In flight wifi is trash, its basically used for ordering food and snacks on the flight. I would take zipair again. They do weigh your carry-on luggage at check-in, then put a sticker on it. If you are 5 people, each person gets 7kg limit, so they weigh all your bags together to make sure they are under 35kgs etc.

Pay attention to the luggage weight. 7kg is *not* much at all and between carry on and backpack is pretty easily exceeded. It *was* enforced at least when I flew, and I ended up having to check my bag, so tack on extra for that. Might be slightly cheaper to just pay for overage fees to carry on anyways but they didn't suggest or offer me that at the time.

yea, just go with a foldable zippered bag [amazon.com] (put it in your carry-on) and only pay for the checked bag returning.

31 inch legroom too, that's the same as united / delta. (though worse than JAL/ANA) I was worried it would be Spirit level but sounds like it's decent.

Cheap yet quality luggage at Asakusa. Tax free, below ¥8000 for the cheapest, 26" luggage with TSA approved lock.

We bought like 4 luggages there in the previous trips so that we don't have to haul luggages from home. Yes, we are in need of new luggages as well.

No kidding, they enforce the carry-on luggage weights. Got me seriously considering those fishing vests with multiple pockets. They also somehow missed that one of our party members had upgraded to two check-ins and wanted to charge us.

Here are the baggage rules:

carry on total 15lb, or pay $38 extra for up to 33lbs carryon weight.

If you need more, then pay $54 for up to 66lbs checked bag.

So unless you can get by with basically no carry on luggage, add either $38 or $54 per direction. It is still better than most Japan fares.

JapanAir for similar dates is $982 with free checked bag, free carryon, and free personal item.
