As noted in the product description:
"Peak Horsepower" (PHP) is a term used in the wet/dry vacuum industry for consumer comparison purposes. It does not denote the operational horsepower of a wet/dry vacuum but rather the horsepower output of a motor, including the motor's inertial contribution, achieved in laboratory testing. In actual use, motors do not operate at the peak horsepower shown.
I got the 6 gallon a couple weeks ago and it is very meh. Quiet as hell but IMO not strong enough suction to be useful - it was struggling to get dog hair and crumbs out of my jeep's carpet. The form factor on the 6 gallon isn't as utilitarian as I hoped: It's smaller in size than the other stealthsonics but still big enough to be an inconvenience when moving it around (compared to my old 1.5 gallon vac). Also it's too low flow to use with a dust deputy and requires makeshift adapting the smaller hose to the dd . I plan to return it and go with the 12 gallon (which - unlike both the 6 and 9 gallon models - has the 2.5" hose). Hopefully that will get enough suction because the 6 gallon is quieter than even my Dyson stick vac.
The 12 gallon actually has a more powerful motor 5.5HP vs 5HP for the 9 gallon. I'm more of a hobbyist when it comes to wood-working, so I opted for the smaller model. In terms suction power, some YT videos show the suction power is just as good as a normal shop vac.

Is 3gal more nice to have?

Does the "Stealthsonic" aspect mean less suction though?

I think the 5.0HP 9 gallon is the minimum recommended if you're going to use a dust collector. The 12 gallon is the ones most recommended on YT. I've read good things about the Dustopper PRO, which I plan to use with the 9 gallon.

Actually, you aren't getting even close to either 5 or 5.5 HP. That would be 3700 to 4100 watts, far above the 1800 to 2400 that the typical 15 or 20 amp house outlet/circuit supplies.

Fyi, I always thought the QTA was the quiet one, however I found out this is not the case and that the difference is with respect to the hose durability, contractor yellow vs normal black. Contractor kit (QTA) also includes a couple additional dust bags.

Read the reviews. Most credit the vac for being quiet but many complaint about suction. Unfortunately, the reviews don't always discern which model size. Additionally, if you're planning to use a vacuum bag inside, there is a design defect which allows the bag to fall out. Most people likely won't use a bag, but I personally think it's a must (with HEPA filter) for dust collection.

I have this for my dog grooming setup. It's CRAZY quiet, which is obviously why I went with it for this application. It definitely lacks suction without some sort of reducer attachment. You know how on a normal power vacuum, you suck up everything? The dirt, sawdust, sneakers that you accidentally got near, small animals, the foundation, septic system. That isn't much of a concern here. It's usable for lightweight stuff or for things that aren't stuck to other things (hay/straw "stuck" to carpet just laughs at this model).

The 12 gallon has been $120 for a while now, I think it's the normal rate. It's important to note that the lowes version does not include the 'contractors pack' of the soft hose and extra bags. You save $80 because of this and for me I knew i needed fine dust bags + hepa filter anyway so it did not matter. I'm fine with the black hose.

About a month ago I got the 12 gallon stealthsonic and couldn't be happier. It's so quiet, its just nice to use and not have to worry about ear protection. The suction is plenty for anything I've done. I often find myself trying to reduce it and wish the hose had a vent, the 9 gallon does have slightly more suction due to chamber size/hp but I think the extra capacity of the 12 gallon is worth it if you EVER plan to use this in a wet capacity. It's very close.

The attachment caddy looks... cheap but works really well. The soft bag does a great job keeping everything together and secure.
The dewalt filters and bags are also great, they swap out easily and you can get a HEPA + 3 fine bags for $60 or so. There were some reviews of people having issues with the bags not staying in... But I've had no issues and I've sanded 1000 sqft of floors and done a ton of drywall work. So tons and tons of fine dust and never any issues. You just really need to seat it.

I will continue to use my 4gal ridgid for auto detailing as i think the suction is a tad higher due to the smaller hose diameter but i'm really happy with this dewalt.

How can you measure the suction of a vacuum in horses? Maybe I don't wanna know.

Costco has a 8 Gal at $84 with a lot of accessories, rated 5HP.

Might be a better deail with Costco's return policy?
