Where do you find this info? My gf and I just bought a mattress and it's so hard to find reviews/info past the site selling it. Seems like they rename the mattresses based on where they're selling and do artificial sales (like this). We got the Serta Perfect Sleeper® Sleep Excellence™ Plush Mattress for 1,000, any insite on that?

I second this. My in laws got us a bedroom set as a wedding gift and they got lied to about the quality and price of the mattress. It was hard as a rock and was nearly impossible to return after barely a week of using.

Seems most of the mattresses are "mattresses in a box". Even though you may go to bobs, sleepys, or mattress firm and see the mattress in person that thing still came from a box. I'm buying a cheaper boxed mattress from Amazon based on reviews. As much of a crapshoot with a much lower cost, going to pay 350 for a 14" thick king.

There used to be a website that had a matrix of all the different stores that sold a particular model of mattress under their own names. It was real useful for price comparisons and for checking reviews but unfortunately I lost the bookmark for the site and can no longer find it. Maybe it doesn't even exist anymore, this was like 15 yrs.ago.

I've found if looking at a spring mattress look at a few things.
1: How man springs does it have. The more the less chance of sinking or a few breaking/weakening and causing a soft spot.
2: The gauge of the sprigs. The lower the number the thicker. So they can support more and less likely to sag.
3: How thick is the top mattress and what is it made of. The top, part over the springs, can be different materials and thickness. The thicker the softer it will be but also can settle with age. Material will come down to what you want. Support vs softness that sinks in.
4: Lastly how much does it weigh. Better mattress will have more, and heavier, springs and also better materials. So in the end they weigh more.
If a mattress maker will not give you basic information to check then that tells you what you need to know.
If you're worried about merchant, try Costco. They have a super lenient return policy and generally sell better reviewed products. Though you're correct - most if not all sites are just promoted reviews.

I get all my mattresses from Costco and I think they are decent for the price. But it's seasonal when they have a large bundle of them stacked in the center for a deal.

A lot of the mattress review websites were bought and sold by businesses that made a killing off referral links. It's honestly hard to find a truly independent mattress review site, and because of the taint of the referall "reviewers" I've lost trust in most of the reviews online these days.
