I will glady pay a little more at the Ace that five minutes from my house, than spend the beter part of an hour, driving to the orange or blue guys, wandering around the store to find something simple, and wait in line to purchase. And don't even start on trying to find an employee to help.
Pricing is higher than Home Depot, but my HD and Lowes are a 15 minute drive (which also means you gotta price in a gallon of gas if you aren't going anywhere else). The ace is only 1 mile away and I can even just zip over there on my bike.
I frequently go past the other hardware/lumber/building supply store (which is a local chain that sells Do it Best stuff) that is less than 1/4 mile away because I think Ace's house brand stuff is generally better and their pricing is on par or better.
I also think my Ace has a pretty good selection of some things. E.g. I was being picky about buying a new shovel...looked at HD, Lowes, ranch supply store, harbor freight, 2 hardware stores...Ace had the shovel I liked the best. Other yard tools too--the selection may be more limited, but they pick *good* ones.
Ace sells Benjamin Moore paint which I like a lot.
Finally, Ace blows away HD for when you need that one random screw or fastener. More selection, more metric, more odd parts...and there's always some guy there that knows where everything is.
edit: that said, Ace's are independently run and can be very different. My current ace relocated within the past decade and is a "fancy" store. I used to live by an urban Ace that was pretty grungy, very cramped, and still had things on the shelves that had probably been hanging there for 25 years. Was still a good ace, but there are definitely bad aces out there.

Im also curious about this
I can very rarely find an item at a good price.
It is usually someone looking at their phone behind the register and 2 older neighborhood fellas telling stories to anyone walking by.

ACE is only good for stuff that only sell for MSRP and never discount.

Of course if you have an Ace 5 minutes from you as opposed to an hour drive.
Luckily I live in a city, and I have Ace, Menards ,Lowes, Crafty Beaver,Home Depot,True Value etc .
Their 25 % off a non sale item price , is still going to be higher than most all other stores or online
.
