You have to be careful with Ace because some stores are corporate owned and some are individually owned. The corporate stores always participate in the corporate promotions, but the individually owned ones can vary quite a bit, so you'll always see "at participating locations" in the fine print of Ace deals.
Can't stress this enough. My local store doesn't participate in a lot of the promotions. They also don't participate in home delivery.

I am curious how Ace stays in business in today's world.
I can very rarely find an item at a good price.
It is usually someone looking at their phone behind the register and 2 older neighborhood fellas telling stories to anyone walking by.
It's like the Radio Shack of the hardware store world. They're clutch when you need one or couple of fasteners and related hardware.

This. 5 minutes from an Ace to buy 1-2 screws to complete a job. Or 12 minutes from a big box (if I make all the lights on the way) to buy 20 screws, only to use the 2 that I need and forget about the 18 when I need them in the future.

Haven't been in a Ace hardware in 20 years, have you?

I will glady pay a little more at the Ace that five minutes from my house, than spend the beter part of an hour, driving to the orange or blue guys, wandering around the store to find something simple, and wait in line to purchase. And don't even start on trying to find an employee to help.
That seems to be their their strategy with mine as well, it's smaller but in a much denser part of the city. It's more expensive but saves me about 40 minutes of driving, and time is money

Yep I have been . They are terrible .
Of course if you have an Ace 5 minutes from you as opposed to an hour drive.
Luckily I live in a city, and I have Ace, Menards ,Lowes, Crafty Beaver,Home Depot,True Value etc .
Their 25 % off a non sale item price , is still going to be higher than most all other stores or online
.
I live in the city too, that is why I have an Ace close by and the big box store require a dirve. I don't know of too many Lowe's or HDs that are located in the core of a large city. Real estate prices are too high. BTW, I never said it was an hour drive.

I like my Ace a lot. They have free popcorn by the door when you walk in. Place is always busy too.

Pricing is higher than Home Depot, but my HD and Lowes are a 15 minute drive (which also means you gotta price in a gallon of gas if you aren't going anywhere else). The ace is only 1 mile away and I can even just zip over there on my bike.

I frequently go past the other hardware/lumber/building supply store (which is a local chain that sells Do it Best stuff) that is less than 1/4 mile away because I think Ace's house brand stuff is generally better and their pricing is on par or better.

I also think my Ace has a pretty good selection of some things. E.g. I was being picky about buying a new shovel...looked at HD, Lowes, ranch supply store, harbor freight, 2 hardware stores...Ace had the shovel I liked the best. Other yard tools too--the selection may be more limited, but they pick *good* ones.

Ace sells Benjamin Moore paint which I like a lot.

Finally, Ace blows away HD for when you need that one random screw or fastener. More selection, more metric, more odd parts...and there's always some guy there that knows where everything is.

edit: that said, Ace's are independently run and can be very different. My current ace relocated within the past decade and is a "fancy" store. I used to live by an urban Ace that was pretty grungy, very cramped, and still had things on the shelves that had probably been hanging there for 25 years. Was still a good ace, but there are definitely bad aces out there.

the big box stores have apps that point you to the location of stuff.

ACE is only good for stuff that only sell for MSRP and never discount.
Last time I went to home depot it literally took me 40 minutes and 3 or 4 employees to find the thing I wanted.

App/website and the employee tablet device claimed different locations for it...but it was in neither (they also claimed different # in stock, but that number was high enough that it was unlikely the item was actually just sold out). Employees mostly had no idea what to do other than look at what the computer was telling them.

Finally found the one guy who happened to actually know where they were (still on the upper storage racks in a completely unrelated aisle...never made it to the floor)...but only by luck as he had just pulled something down from right next to it the day before.

Is that an everyday problem? No. But it is also much harder to find someone able to help at HD than it was back in the day...especially someone who actually knows anything about what they are selling. The crusty old guy working at the neighborhood Ace because he's bored with retirement is excited to help you. Guys like that used to work at home depot when I was a kid...not anymore.

Just an fyi when you exchange tanks you only get 15lbs. If there is a local refill station they will fill them to 20lbs. Our local one is costs about 30% less to refill and they will inspect/recertify for about $5
I do this as well. However, my ACE won't fill an expired tank and they always check. So I'll do an exchange to get a new tank. I check for the newest date so I don't have to do it very often.

A much smaller City than the rest of us apparently. I have every single hardware store available known to man within 10 mi but Ace is willing to pay that dense Urban rent to be closer to people.

Typical, I live in XYZ and I don't go to store ABC so that means all stores ABC around the country have no purpose. Plenty of Ace's are popular in more remote places like near the beach and many are unique to what that community needs. And with coupons and items are often cheaper than HD or Lowe's.

Love to see evidence of the same items being 26% or more expensive at Ace. I find they are the same price or maybe a few bucks more. Just bought a sump pump discharge hose for $20 at HD and a day later it was $18 at ACE before coupons.

The company has $9B in revenue up from $6B in 2019. Doesn't seem logical or possible to continue to grow revenues if they are charging 26% or more across the board and only capitalizing on convenient locations. All of their items and price are available on their website.
