isn't this the one that's been on sale for $1999 pretty much everywhere, best buy included?
Yes, for the base model with the 18GB RAM. Now the base 16" model is $1,799. This makes for a very compelling buy. This is now only $300 more than the 14" version.

ahh! I stand corrected. I missed the amount of RAM. good find. Best Buy has the refurbished one for the same price — I'd say, um, buy new
Great deals all around! 25% off, or even 28% off the M3 Pro with 18GB / 512GB ... has Apple ever discounted so deeply?
M4 Macbook Pro probably announced in October. But aside from AI probably a marginal bump as in previous Apple Silicon revisions. We know this because the M4 is already in the iPad Pro. Note that synthetic benchmarks for M4 chip are deceptive because of inclusion of new matrix instructions which boost specific benches.

This will probably stack with the $25 reward when buying a laptop over $250 for plus / total members too.
At this point, it's the lowest the 16" has ever been, but we're now about 9 days away from apple's event. I've waited long enough, might just have to wait until then. Maybe this deal will come back again, I just don't know for sure it's good enough to pull trigger.... thoughts?

Kind of in the same boat. I have an M1 Pro and based on my research the M3 Pro isn't that significant of an upgrade. More of a sidegrade. The M3 Max is a different story.
My two cents is that the M3 Max deal is solid. The M3 Pro deal is great if you don't have an M series Macbook already.
If you're like me and have an M1 Pro currently, either get the M3 Max deal or wait for the M4 Pro announcements.
M4 MacBook Pros are entering production according to the typical supplier reliable leakers. They won't be highlighted at the September event - that's for iOS devices, home devices, wearables, and sometimes macOS, sometimes not.
The M4 MacBook Pros will likely be announced in a mid-late October event.
What's so interesting about these deals are the absolute firesale prices on them. Either there's a real surplus of inventory, or they think the 25% uplift on single-thread from M3 to M4 plus any other changes (base 16GB of ram is 10 years overdue but it sounds like it's finally happening, if Pros go up to 32gb base that would be a huge uplift and differentiator as well) will make M3 stock hard to get rid of.
I got one of these M3s on this sale, most people probably should, but mentally prepare for some M4 benchmarks to be impressive.

Good points! I think for most people who already have M1 Pro / M2 Pro, the upgrade to M3 Pro just isn't worth it. You don't gain much, and depending on the model you choose it can actually be a downgrade. M3 Max is a different story

Apple M3 Pro Chip, 512 GB, 36GB Unified Memory - shows me $2399 and not $2199. Is it the same for everyone?
They well a 4TB WD for $129
