Taiwan is pretty westernized. Heavily influenced by US in their way of government and heavily influenced by Japan culturally. It's one of the most American friendly countries to visit. Very polite people. No crime virtually anywhere. Food and entertainment is amazing.

Safety is the same, but Taiwan will be much more convenient as a tourist because you won't need a visa, you can use Google etc., and you can use your credit card or paper NTD instead of hassling with Chinese payment apps

Went to Taipei this summer and it was easy to navigate on GMaps. Went a night club and shit was lit there too, they know how to party over there lol

I grew up in China. In addition to what others said: people in Taiwan speak better English on average than China, I remember street food seller being able to speak a bit English. Taiwan doesn't have the excessive security check and ID check, like some places in China have (Beijing is the worst, especially Tiananmen square). In Taiwan, I only went through security check at office of the president and airport. In China you may have to make reservations to tourist places with your name and ID number, and it's often done in WeChat app and the UI is in Chinese. And I see way more foreign faces in Taipei than in Beijing. I would recommend going to Taiwan first since there are more hurdles for foreign tourists to jump through in China. But don't get me wrong, China does have a lot to see and play/eat/experience.

Awesome - thank you all for the spot on information I was looking for. I am going to look up dates to see if I can make a trip happen, as Japan constantly proves to be costly and busier most of the times.

The origin meme in this #1 thing came from some US streamers have been trolling CN players while yelling out Taiwan #1 for CN players' behavior in the game, once CN player heard, they curse you and try to kill you in the game.
The reason for their anger probably due to some people were educated to bully anything about Taiwan just like their government's do, while many of them don't even know the reason for the hatred.
You can also hear this from the Olympic game between TW & CN competition. Now it's more like support democracy against autocracy.
