Warren. They also make the Walmart super tech oil too. It's good stuff especially for the price.

You can take it to most oil change locations for no fee. I just dropped off 3 5 quart containers at Walmart when I bought a few jugs of mobile 1. I also drop off at auto parts stores like O'Reilly, advance Auto parts, etc. please recycle the oil as it has large ecological impact if thrown out or disposed of improperly

I've been changing the oil and ATF in my vehicles for a year now and I don't know what to do with the old oil I've been saving in the containers and at this point I'm too afraid to ask…

I take mine to advance auto parts

Walmart sells OEM oil filters.

Typically, I've noticed lower prices for items purchased via store pick up versus on the shelf in the store.

Order via app/web and store PU FTW.
OE's don't make filters, the big filter guys do and private label them. In fact the OE's don't make most of those mundane parts, like wiper blades as well.

It's a federal law that every location that sells as retail inventory that contains materials that are harmful to the environment need to adopt a disposal program in place. That's why Home Depot have fluorescent bulbs disposal for the mercury in them and all other stores have disposal tanks for oils. Costco are just being cheap and exploiting legal loopholes to avoid this, claiming they are not retail seller.
Do you have a source for that? The best I found was that it's not considered hazardous waste until the retailer has it, and if anything all they need to provide is a list of where to dispose of it, they don't actually have to take it back. That is, the retailer needing to take back used oil is a state thing. In New England apparently Mass is the only state with such a law. Some nationwide chains might do it just for the PR. Many local shops might take used oil because they can burn it for heat in the winter, so it's free fuel for them. Many towns have transfer stations you can take stuff like oil to as well.

So now we save $$$ on the engine oil, what about the filter? Where do you all buy oil filters from?
I used to buy oil filters for $6-$8 from the local stores like Pep Boys or Advance Auto Parts. When I went to the Advance Auto Parts two days ago, I was shocked. Filters are $16 now. I bought the filter from Amazon last year. So not sure when the price went up.
I get mine from Amazon. Fortunately I have 2 Hondas that take the same oil and filters (Pilot and Odyssey), both 0W20 and PL14610. That filter is currently @ $8.73 on amazon and it's available for S&S too. I'll usually add a few to an S&S order if I've accumulated enough items to unlock the higher %.

I do like to stock up on the oils when they go on sale but do have a question. If the jug doesn't get opened, is there a life span? such as an "expiration" date? In other words, if I bought 20 jugs, (assuming 1 oil change every 3 months) would the last jug of oil, roughly 5 to 6 years or so after puchasing, degrade in quality?
Basically it's not going to "go bad" in any reasonable timescale. Mobil officially says 5 years provided you don't store it in an oven. BITOG says basically indefinitely, just store it unopened in a cool place out of the sun and shake it up before you use it.

That said, Costco runs this sale every now and then. I "converted" to Kirkland oil about a year and a half ago and am still working off that first salvo of jugs (8), but I know the same deal has come around at least twice since then, meaning don't worry about stocking up too much

Recommend to add oil additive with your oil change using this. Been using this brand and liqui moly ceramic additive. Runs pretty good on Lexus rx350. Going to change to liqui moly oil bc the mileage is getting high.

My costco is crazy too. It is bearable only an hour before the closing. If I go two hours before closing I spend an hour to find parking.

So now you're asking for a legal consultation. The logic is laid out in the Title 40, Chapter I, Subchapter R, Part 761. This is the basis of the federal outlines in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) which then points to state mandated procedures. A lot of states, at state level, require retail seller of engine oil to maintain facilities to accept used engine oil. I live in PA and every auto store has a tank in the back where you can dump yours. It is fully recyclable, and that's how promos like this one get so cheap. NJ&MD are the same. In your neck of the woods I've seen the same except CT and NH, but they have a mind of their own on everything, don't they.
In my state this also applies to other harmful chemicals, such as pans and cookware having PFAS/PFOA for example.
What is double aggravating is that losers like Costco reek the benefits of programs like this, without contributing anything. There is a reason why it has to be recycled - otherwise people just burn it and put all the oil additives in the air which later on we breathe and drink.

I can't believe you guys are running 10k~15k between oil changes. I used to be an Auto Tech and now work as an Engineer and you DO NOT want to be running this long. It's not about the oil, it's about the dirtiness coming from your engine through the rings and seals. This is a very bad idea. I have seen hundreds/thousands of engines going bad from doing this. This is specially more common today due to all the turbos and cam adjustments being controlled by oil. Replace your oil every 5k.

I was asking for a reference as all I could find was that compulsory acceptance of motor oil was a state level issue, not a federal one. It seems you agree with me, but went on to post about federal something that's not related.

BTW your reference is about PCB's, not used motor oil.

Again, you could change oil every 1k miles and be super safe but also waste a ton of time and money. The question is the balance of not wasting either but ensuring you're protecting your engine. I'd trust the OEM's - they design the engines, they specify the oil, so it makes sense that they generally should also be able to specify change intervals. Anecdotally I had that BMW I mentioned the OBDC would lean to 18-20k which I thought was crazy, so I changed at 10k and sold the car at 194k only doing minor maintenance to the engine (plugs, 3 coil packs and the cover gasket). I used OE filters and Mobil1. Then I've had several Hondas which the OBDC tends to more like 9k intervals. I use Purolator filters and this oil. Several way past 100k before I sold them off.

Really oil life is a matter that's engine specific and if you really want to get technical you could send a bit of oil off for analysis every 1k or whatnot, look at trends, and decide threshold levels in analysis where it makes sense to change the oil. No doubt the OE's have already done this, but it does depend on driving habits, climate, etc etc. That's a bit much for basically everyone though.

If you're in CT which one do you go to? I frequent the South Windsor and East Lyme stores because they are convenient, and they are very rarely how some people on SD describe their local Costco, and I'm usually there on Saturdays or Sundays, or on the way home from work during the week.

12 years and counting. No issues yet. Just checked oil 5k into this change and oil is still at full.

My car oem recommendation is 10k from get go. High quality oils 15-25k nonissue

But I did 15k with amsoil signature despite rating 25k bc oil filter shouldn't go over 15k

But I'm doing 10k now w Toyota filter + Mobil 1 afe 0w20 at Costco after I kill off my remaining 20 quarts of extended protection Mobil 1 from prior Mobil 1 sale at Walmart
