Speaking as someone who used to buy stuff like this, it's borderline pointless. Think you need a firestarter? Bring a mini bic. Worried about relying on a lighter? Bring two mini bics. Easier, lighter, cheaper.

I agree. Worried that your lighter won't work if you get it wet? Put it in a plastic bag.

I'd go one better.
Camping and worried? Buy this: https://ucogear.com/products/stor...es-20-pack
They will light in ANY conditions. They burn for 7 minutes, which is enough time to get even wet wood to start burning.
So as the caretaker of a boy scout who was recently begging for one of the Harbor Freight magnesium block doohickies ... this reminded me to add the bayite 1/2" x 6" rod to my S&S order. I'm getting the impression that this is a fine product, but I've saved my broken hacksaw blades. And obviously mini Bics are way ultralightier.

It's not about the function, it's about the feeling.
the real magnesium ones burn much better than the average made in china variants.
However 3 bic lighters may not work 5 years down the line. 1 bic, pack of storm matches, and fire steel covers all your bases.
