Is there any open SW out there to flash an older router to make it function something like one of these travel routers?

I paid $33.90 earlier this year. Excellent router with great VPN integration. Very pleased.

Is this the best travel router or do you have better. Also any tutorial to follow to use this in a hotel?

GL-MT3000 from the same company is much better, native OpenWRT support. Goes for under $70 on aliexpress.

Sorry for the dumb question but where does it get internet from? Do you have to plug it into a modem? And how does that work while traveling?

In hotels, you need to sign in first using your laptop (or maybe phone). Once you're connected, you then clone your mac address to this router. This router will basically pretend to be your laptop. You then connect your devices to this router.

You will also need a VPN service that offers OpenVPN to fully protect yourself. There are youtube videos that shows you how to go about it.

some of the other replies are more complex than you may be looking for.

you can get internet from a few sources:
  1. ethernet. same as a normal router, plug a modem into it.
  2. repeater. will grab existing wifi and rebroadcast. this one in particular is super cool with these routers as it lets you do things like share a single paid connection (airplane / hotel / etc) to multiple devices.
  3. phone. sorta like putting your phone into tether mode but has more options and can potentially avoid tethering data limits depending on your situation.

Thanks. That last one caught my attention. So I plug a phone into it to rebroadcast its signal as a wifi network?
