I know Lowe's is pretty popular with a lot of folks, but based on just general incidental observations over the last five years or so (since I became a home owner and started to use these stores more often), Lowe's is clearly much more expensive. And I don't get why. I can understand why Ace Hardware is generally more expensive (which I find to be the most expensive of the three) — it's a smaller store; quick in and quick out, so prices reflect that. But as to why Lowe's is consistently more expensive than Home Depot; it always boggles me. To my untrained eye, I can't really make out any quality or service difference to command the higher prices.
I like the power tool and hand tool selection at HD better. Timber quality seems to be better and slightly cheaper at my local HD as well compared to local Lowes.
