There's probably also another group that get it for work compatibility reasons.
If someone doesn't fall into one of those two categories, then yes, free versions make sense.

Buy 5 of these for $150, add them to your MS account, then pay for 1 month of family through MS (you have to wait a month I believe as the most you can have is 5 years total). That converts the entire 5 years to family for like $7 more. Or do 1 year or 2 or 3 or whatever you want.

The conversion is never guaranteed, it will tell you on the upgrade screen if they're going to prorate or not. In the past, they never did, but I haven't done it in a while. I just tested it on a personal account I have and the upgrade screen is showing I'll get the full amount of time converted to family. YMMV

If you want 6TB of storage in your OneDrive ID, this is the hack:
1) Create 5 other emails and share your family O365 with them.
2) Create the O365 ID
3) Next create a folder and share it with your primary O356 id with full RW privileges
4) Now your main O365 DI will have 5 folders with 1TB limit with full RW privileges... so in total you can store 6TB Data in your primary ac.

I just tested it on a personal account I have and the upgrade screen is showing I'll get the full amount of time converted to family. YMMV
Their terms used to say you would not lose anything by converting to family, but so many people did it, they changed the terms to say you would lose 15% of the time when converting, but everyone said they weren't losing anything. So maybe it only applies to new subscriptions/accounts.
But 15% would be like 9 months lost, so apparently they aren't even fully enforcing the new terms.
Regardless, a good deal no matter what.

I have been using O365 for long and have been using Personal codes to extend my Family plan, and every time I use a personal code, I get 9 months of family.
The earlier hack was that you create a 1 person account, then add 4 years of extension to it, and then covert the personal acc to family account by 1) turning on auto renew and adding 1 months of Family 2) adding 1 years of Family code.. this converted your full Personal account to Family without loss of any months. But once you are on family plan, you cant use this hack any more...

The hack seems to still work for existing accounts like mine, apparently new ones lose 3 months off the 5 years, but still a great hack. That may also because the other user loaded up with 5 years and didn't wait a month before converting.
