So who is the target market for these ? I really don't see how they sell enough to cover the production cost.

I really suspect this is not Pioneer of Japan. Pioneer might have licensed their name to some Chinese company (Like Hisense) to produce these cheap tvs.

plenty of people still want small TVs.

and based on reviews, could be a decent pc monitor too

the internets says this TV is manufactured by TCL, and the picture quality is pretty good

i'm pretty sure this TV cost is also subsidized by comcast and spectrum.

overall , a 43" TCL roku/google tv is a better purchase, and less restrictive than a Xumo.

I have a Xumo TV and I wouldn't recommend it. The app ecosystem is annoying and you can't hide the ones you don't use.

Seconded! Worst OS on a Smart TV I have ever seen.

That said... If you have anything else streaming HDMI out; the panel itself makes it a basement option.

Two things.

1. The Pioneer name is almost certainly licensed out here. This is probably a TV that's mass produced and sold under many different brand names, meaning cheap production and virtually no additional R&D.

2. The cost of smart TVs is subsidized by the services they include and the data they collect on you.

Who would want a cheap, crappy TV like this? Me! I bought good, high-end TVs for my living room and basement "home theater" room, but I have cheap generic, black Friday doorbuster TVs like this in my bedroom and guest bedroom. I don't care much about picture quality in these rooms b/c I'm just watching the news while I'm getting reading in the mornings, or youtube videos while I'm doing chores. All my serious watching is on the good TVs.

I throw an old AppleTV or Roku on them, and skip the onboard OS. It's always terrible on these cheap TVs, and the bargain bin processors they use are underpowered from day one and only get worse as the OS is updated and bloated.

Any opinions on getting this as an external monitor for an M1 MacBook Air? Trying to find the sweet spot between monitor/TV. Not gaming. Just streaming/general office work.

40" is about as big as you want to go for a flat screen on a desk. I have a Samsung 40" 4k that I for for about $250 used at my desk for a while and the corners are a little far away compared to the center. I eventually moved to 3 Dell 27 4ks in an H pattern (vert-landscape-vert) My next big boy is going to be a curved 4 or 8k.

I'm actually in the market for a 32"-43" tv for the bedroom. I'll pass on this one though.
