We have been using Eastsport bags for my LO's school backpack. We replace it each year and they have been able to get through the entire school year without any problems. Sure they are not High Sierra or Jansport, but for the price they are good enough to replace each year when the school year starts.

I am going to stay away from these $10 Walmart backpacks. I bought a "Swiss Tech" backpack from Walmart, 6 months ago. It came complete with the red cross logo and everything. Except, it was complete junk and fell apart after two uses.

Not the same item, but similar to the one I purchased.

Completely agree, stay away from cheap backpacks, but keep in mind Swiss tech is not Swissgear, I don't know how they are not slapped with a law suit from Swissgear yet.

What's the gold standard for middle school backpacks that can fit a small insulated lunch bag in it?

That's because it's Swiss tech and not "Swiss gear"

If you want one that will last for years go with LL Bean or Lands End, my kids used for many years but they did outgrow the younger sizes, they put a ton of weight in them by middle school

I agree 100% with you on the LL Bean. I had bought the LL Bean 42 L Comfort Carry Portable Locker and worked great for use in middle school and still going strong being used for the high school. Didn't know about Land's End. May try it this time.

There's a number of good quality "Swiss" branded products and Swiss Tech isn't one of them. To make matters worse, they all seem to use some variation of the Swiss flag and/or red/white cross markings.

Victorniox, Wenger, and Swiss Gear are legitimate Swiss-owned brands that usually make high quality products, whereas Swiss TECH mostly makes low quality crap, oftentimes (and likely purposefully) designed to look similar to the other brands. Swiss Tech is no more related to Switzerland than French Fries are to France.

Making things even more confusing: there appears to be THREE different Swiss Tech brands operating at the same time: "Swiss Tech Outdoors", "Swiss Tech USA", and "Swiss+Tech". All seem to be different companies, but use similar red/white branding, with Swiss Tech USA almost directly ripping off the Wenger/Swiss Gear's red square and white cross logo.

I own both Swiss Gear and Victorinox luggage and have used Swiss Gear laptop bags at work and home for many years and can confirm they are very high quality. Contrast that with the Swiss Tech bags and backpacks sold at Walmart and they seem to be lightweight, poorly manufactured garbage. Both bags side-by-side will appear very similar on first glance, but the quality difference is apparent when you actually pick them up.

Are they broken after 1 year? eg zipper not working or split at seams. I am considering this brand for donation to school.

No, they're not broken but the fabric looks visibility worn out after a year. They're very functional and roomy bags and most kids will be grateful to receive a bag like this in donation.
