Quora isn't the be all and end all of authoritative sources, but this is what I found.

Apparently this question comes up with some regularity on reddit and other forums. People are frustrated because Lifestraw's website speaks to duty life with use (5 years), but not shelf life of the unopened product. The "no chemicals or moving parts" rationale for the filter element itself seems plausible at least.

Thanks for the link...That was my assumption as well, just a filter that should last forever if unopened and unused. They probably don't want to mention that to not hurt their sales and people can rebuy after 5 or so years.
