Personally, I'd rather take the longer return period. My experience with Segway's customer service/warranty was terrible. I got a Segway through Kohls and there was one rubber bumper that was being held in place with a screw. They overtightened the screw and damaged the bumper. I emailed customer support asking just to send me the rubber bumper and they made me send the whole scooter back. I will admit, they were good about sending me a whole box and paying for shipping. The scooter got back to me with "no trouble found." I told support they didn't fix the problem and they made me ship the scooter back again. This time I put a big yellow sticker on it pointing to the problem and a note saying what's going on. It came back to me again with "no trouble found". Shipping the scooter back and forth was definitely taking it's toll as I could tell the scooter was getting beat up every time it was being shipping around because the box they sent me was not as secure as the original box. I told support to please just send me the rubber bumper and they refused, saying I have to send it back for replacement. I got frustrated, so tried to return the scooter to Kohls, but they refused because it was past the 30 day return period. I reached out to my Capital one and filed a dispute but they refused because it was past the 30 day return period. I tried to argue that it went past the 30 days because Segway was forcing me to ship the scooter back and forth for repairs. Neither Capital One nor Kohls cared and told me to pound sand. As a last effort, I filed a complaint with the FTC and that did escalate things at Segway, but the manager told me that they didn't have the part and are not sure when they will get it.
I went on ebay and bought the rubber bumper for like $10. The scooter worked pretty well after that and I will admit it was fun to use.
That experience soured me on a lot of companies and made me wary not to trust any of them to have your back. Especially if there's significant money at stake. Being able to to take it back to a Walmart store for 90 days, for any reason, is worth the extra $10 to me.
