Using less soap is better than using too much soap. You really don't need much for a load of clothes actually. Pretreat stains to get those out, the rest of the dirt in clothes is mostly BO and sweat and mild dirt and it doesn't take much to get it clean

I wouldn't recommend following their directions anyways, they want you to use more so you buy more.

Anyone know why I would need to use more if I have a HE washer? Kinda defeats the point of high efficiency

More clothes mean more water, so more detergent needed. HE is high efficiency, but not infinite efficiency.
