Most laptops require single-sided M.2 SSD and this 4TB Crucial P3 is one of them, so there's a use for this. The chips are on one side so it is thin enough to fit in the confined space.
I only learned this yesterday after researching a potential laptop purchase for a few hours, and i've been building my own computers for years, so i think it's worth sharing.

Thanks for the additional info. I ran into this same problem last year when I bought a double sided module and found out it wouldn't fit and had to find a single sided one instead.

I feel like eBay has these for 199 often. So this doesn't seem like a deal. Benn waiting for these to drop another 25 or so and then I'll byte.

Has definitely been lower in the past. SSD prices are all over the place though. This isn't the worst option out there, but if you don't need one at this exact moment I wouldn't go stacking up on these.

Would this be a decent backup drive or m500 2tb?

Isn't this one of the models that slows to a crawl as you start filling it up? I know for gaming that the fastest drive doesn't matter as much, but when you can't even use it as intended, I don't see the point.

It's the same controller that's capped to PCIe 3.0; it's actually notably cooler than the plus. The drive in either form is pretty junky QLC, so peak throughput is pretty meaningless. BtW, this is the Plus model.

What is a better 4TB Single Sided PCIe 4.0 drive?

I have this exact drive and it's not even a suitable archive drive for backup purpose, due to its horrible speed after buffer is full. Its use case is quite tricky. It's slow as C drive, and it's not able to keep acceptable sustained performance during bulk transfer. It does help improve patience though, so I give it some credit . I use it as backup drive and just don't watch the progress bar when transferring data.
For data archive drive, those $70-80 12TB refurb HDD drives have much better sustained speed than this patient-practicing device.
