I have heard that before but I have been using mine for over 2 years and it's never once happened.
In fact, the only bad thing to happen was the safety guard broke and they sent me a new one for free.
I received an AA-powered version of this in the pre-9/11 times. I clearly thought so little of it that I don't even remember when I threw it away or why I threw it away. Since I'm not one for throwing things away, I assume it promptly stopped working - I bought my current nose hair trimmer a couple of years later.
I'd be a little suspicious that replacing the AAs with a (14500?) and adding 20 additional years of cost engineering didn't improve things.
