Anybody know if getting an 18" bar and chain works on the 16" model?
It probably will work if the chain drive links are the same. You can measure between drive links on the two chains for a 10 links. If the measurement is the same it will probably work.
Additionally, you will probably overload the 16" motor if you do a lot of cuts with an 18" bar and chain.
In for 2. Will pick up tomorrow at local Lowe's. I have a 18" EGO chain saw and have many of hours of use with it around my 5 acres. A couple of years back I did change the 18" bar for the 16" and am happy with the performance.
Just got my first chainsaw, how often do you have to replace these? I thought the chain was all you'd have to replace.
The chain can be sharpened a few times before needing to be replaced. The bar will need to be replaced when the chain is loose side to side in the bar.
I use my chain saws for home use only.
If you add grease to the front sprocket and ensure the chain/bar oiler is working and full of oil, the original bar will last a long time. How long is dependent on how much you use the saw.
I blow my chainsaw out with compressed air after every use. I verify the oiler is working, keep the sprocket well-greased and have never replaced a bar but have sharpened many chains.

Got the ego chainsaw 18, left outside in the rain forgotten a few days, rust was all over the chain bar. So it is not rust resistant, don't listen to it. Unless u spray rust proof paint b4 using it than might work
store has 15 of the 16" and 16 of the 18" all at $9.90...must have been a big seller!
The advice on greasing the sprocket is right on. People forget to do this and saw will loose power and the bar will wear faster. Buy yourself a grease gun for the sprocket and keep it lubed as part of reg maintenance and your bar will last a long time
