You buy a device for $900. Then you trade in (return the device) and get $800 off on the next device and still pay $300-$400 difference. So you basically bought the new device for $1200-$1300 because you don't have the new device anymore. You keep on doing this every year or two - it is the companies that are making money. Eventually the smart devices will either be refurbished and resold to people. Companies will still make money one time. This is a great business tactic.

No doubt these manufacturers will have a really high bar for inspections and inclined to recycle old, returned phones instead of reselling it themselves.
Some 3rd party refurbishing companies contracted by Apple got sued for selling old phones instead of sending them for recycling as directed by Apple.
